Description Original: Leaves of Grass is a poetry collection by American poet Walt Whitman. First published in 1855, Whitman spent most of his professional life writing and rewriting Leaves of Grass. The collection of loosely connected poems represents the celebration of his philosophy of life and humanity, and praises nature and the individual humans role in it. Rather than focusing on religious or spiritual matters, Leaves of Grass focuses primarily on the body and the material world. It is notable for its discussion of delight in sensual pleasures during a time when such candid displays were considered immoral. The book was highly controversial during its time for its explicit sexual imagery, and Whitman was subject to derision by many contemporary critics. Over time, however, the collection has infiltrated popular culture and became recognized as one of the central works of American poetry. Among the works in this collection are “Song of Myself”, “I Sing the Body Electric”, and “Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking”. Later editions would include Whitmans elegy to the assassinated President Abraham Lincoln, “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloomd”.

Description wiki: The Enchiridion or Handbook of Epictetus (Ancient Greek: ??????????? ?????????, Enkheir dion Epikt?tou) is a short manual of Stoic ethical advice compiled by Arrian, a 2nd-century disciple of the Greek philosopher Epictetus. Although the content is mostly derived from the Discourses of Epictetus, it is not a summary of the Discourses but rather a compilation of practical precepts. Eschewing metaphysics, Arrian focuses his attention on Epictetuss work applying philosophy to daily life. Thus, the book is a manual to show the way to achieve mental freedom and happiness in all circumstances. The Enchiridion was well-known in the ancient world, and in the medieval period, it was specially adapted for use in Greek-speaking monasteries. In the 15th-century it was translated into Latin, and then, with the advent of printing, into multiple European languages. It reached the height of popularity in the 17th century, in parallel with the Neostoicism movement.
Description Good Reads: Handbook of Epictetus also known as Enchiridion written by legendary Greek Stoic philosopher Epictetus is a manual of Stoic ethical advice. Compiled by Arrian, who was a student of Epictetus, this great classic will surely attract a whole new generation of readers. For many, the Handbook of Epictetus is required reading for various courses and curriculums. And for others who simply enjoy reading timeless pieces of classic literature, this gem by Epictetus is highly recommended. Published by Classic Books America and beautifully produced, the Handbook of Epictetus would make an ideal gift and it should be a part of everyones personal library.

Description wiki: Noli Me T ngere (Latin for “Touch me not”; acute accent is added on the final word in accordance with Spanish orthography) is an 1887 novel by Filipino writer and activist Jos Rizal published during the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines. It explores perceived inequities in law and practice in terms of the treatment by the ruling government and the Spanish Catholic friars of the resident peoples. Originally written by Rizal in Spanish, the book has since been more commonly published and read in the Philippines in either Tagalog (the major indigenous language), or English. The Rizal Law requires Noli and its sequel, El filibusterismo to be read by all high school students throughout the country. Noli is studied in Grade 9 and El filibusterismo in Grade 10. The two novels are widely considered to be the national epic of the Philippines. They have been adapted in many forms, such as operas, musicals, plays, and other forms of art. The title originates from the Biblical passage John 20:13-17. In Rizals time it also referred to cancers that occurred on the face, particularly cancers of the eyelid; touching such lesions irritated them, causing pain.[1] As an ophthalmologist, Rizal was familiar with the cancer and the name.[2] He is explicit about the connection in the novels dedication, which begins: A mi patria (To my country)[3]:?26? and continues with “…a cancer of so malignant a character that the least touch irritates it and awakens in it the sharpest pains.”[a] Rizal probes the cancers of Filipino society.[4] Early English translations of the novel used different titles, such as An Eagle Flight (1900) and The Social Cancer (1912), but more recent English translations use the original title. Description Good Reads: In more than a century since its appearance, Jos Rizals Noli Me Tangere has become widely known as the great novel of the Philippines. A passionate love story set against the ugly political backdrop of repression, torture, and murder, “The Noli,” as it is called in the Philippines, was the first major artistic manifestation of Asian resistance to European colonialism, and Rizal became a guiding conscience and martyr for the revolution that would subsequently rise up in the Spanish province. Description wiki: American Notes for General Circulation is a travelogue by Charles Dickens detailing his trip to North America from January to June 1842. While there he acted as a critical observer of North American society, almost as if returning a status report on their progress. This can be compared to the style of his Pictures from Italy written four years later, where he wrote far more like a tourist. Having arrived in Boston, he visited Lowell, New York, and Philadelphia, and travelled as far south as Richmond, as far west as St. Louis and as far north as Quebec. The American city he liked best was Boston “the air was so clear, the houses were so bright and gay. […] The city is a beautiful one, and cannot fail, I should imagine, to impress all strangers very favourably.” Further, it was close to the Perkins Institution and Massachusetts Asylum for the Blind where Dickens encountered Laura Bridgman, who impressed him greatly.
Description Good Reads: When Charles Dickens set out for America in 1842 he was the most famous man of his day to travel there – curious about the revolutionary new civilization that had captured the English imagination. His frank and often humorous descriptions cover everything from his comically wretched sea voyage to his sheer astonishment at the magnificence of the Niagara Falls, while he also visited hospitals, prisons and law courts and found them exemplary. But Dickenss opinion of America as a land ruled by money, built on slavery, with a corrupt press and unsavoury manners, provoked a hostile reaction on both sides of the Atlantic. American Notes is an illuminating account of a great writers revelatory encounter with the New World. In her introduction, Patricia Ingham examines the response the book received when it was published, and compares it with similar travel writings of the period and with Dickenss fiction, in particular Martin Chuzzlewit. This edition includes an updated chronology, appendices and notes. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.
Description Penquin: American Notes is the fascinating travel journal of one of nineteenth-century America s most celebrated visitors: Charles Dickens. A lively chronicle of his five-month trip around the United States in 1842, the book records the author s adventures journeying by steamboat and stagecoach, as well as his impressions of everything from schools and prisons to table manners and slavery. More than a travelogue, it is also a serious discourse on the character and institutions of a young democracy. Dickens distrusted much of what he saw, and he wrote so frankly that the New York Herald dismissed the work as the essence of balderdash. In retrospect, American Notes can be read as the account of a traumatic excursion from which Dickens emerged, both emotionally and politically, a changed man.

Description Original: In 1842, the novelist Charles Dickens traveled to the New World of America which had captured the imagination of the English people since the Revolution. His humorous and candid descriptions detailed every experience from his travel by sea, steamboat, and stagecoach to his visits to American courts, prisons, and hospitals on his five-month journey. Arriving in Boston, he made his way to New York, then to Philadelphia, and went south as Richmond, and west to St. Louis and as far north as near Quebec where he was awestruck by the sight of Niagara Falls. He found the institutions exemplary, the citizens lacking in table manners, and the land built on slavery to be influenced by a corrupt press and unequal rule by the monied class. At the time of its publication, the book was dismissed by the New York Herald as the essence of balderdash. This travelogue provided Dickens with inspiration for his novel Martin Chuzzlewit. American Notes for General Circulation is a travelogue by Charles Dickens chronicling his visit to North America from January to June 1842. The author shares his impressions of the people and places of this vast region and his lasting impressions of Canada after he returned home. This book provides insights into aspects of North American culture, life, and times. The journey of Charles Dickens to Canada, from his birthplace in England to his death in Canada, became a unique case study in American history and one of the enduring legacies of the American Empire. For this important historical event, the author was to have several opportunities to express his extreme emotions and thoughts while maintaining distance from the readers. The author was forced to do this because of the strict censorship of newspapers at that time in both North America and England. His writings while in Canada gave him first-hand access to events that occurred within the borders of the two countries and allowed him to describe them in his own words. American Notes for General Circulation Book gives a rare inside look at the lives and writings of this remarkable man.

Description wiki: The Mystery of Edwin Drood is the final novel by Charles Dickens,[1][2] originally published in 1870. Though the novel is named after the character Edwin Drood, it focuses more on Droods uncle, John Jasper, a precentor, choirmaster and opium addict, who is in love with his pupil, Rosa Bud. Miss Bud, Edwin Droods fianc e, has also caught the eye of the high-spirited and hot-tempered Neville Landless. Landless and Edwin Drood take an instant dislike to each other. Later Drood disappears under mysterious circumstances. The story is set in Cloisterham, a lightly disguised Rochester.[3] Upon the death of Dickens on 9 June 1870, the novel was left unfinished, only six of a planned twelve instalments having been published. He left no detailed plan for the remaining instalments or solution to the novels mystery, and many later adaptations and continuations by other writers have attempted to complete the story.
Description Good Reads: Charles Dickenss final, unfinished novel, and one that has puzzled readers and inspired writers since its publication, The Mystery of Edwin Drood is edited with an introduction by David Paroissien in Penguin Classics. Edwin Drood is contracted to marry orphan Rosa Bud when he comes of age, but when they find that duty has gradually replaced affection, they agree to break off the engagement. Shortly afterwards, in the middle of a storm on Christmas Eve, Edwin disappears, leaving nothing behind but some personal belongings and the suspicion that his jealous uncle John Jasper, madly in love with Rosa, is the killer. And beyond this presumed crime there are further intrigues: the dark opium dens of the sleepy cathedral town of Cloisterham, and the sinister double life of Choirmaster Jasper, whose drug-fuelled fantasy life belies his respectable appearance. Dickens died before completing The Mystery of Edwin Drood, leaving its tantalising mystery unsolved and encouraging successive generations of readers to turn detective. Charles Dickens is one of the best-loved novelists in the English language, whose 200th anniversary was celebrated in 2012. His most famous books, including Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities, David Copperfield and The Pickwick Papers, have been adapted for stage and screen and read by millions.

Description Original: Charles Dickens published 6 of the 12 installments of this mystery but died before he could complete it. He left no detailed plans indicating how the mystery would end or what future installments would reveal. This has led to several generations of writers playing detective on their own and attempting to complete the compelling tale. How do you think it will end? Though the novel is named after the character Edwin Drood, it focuses more on Droods uncle, John Jasper, a precentor, choirmaster, and opium addict, who is in love with his pupil, Rosa Bud. Rosa Bud however is also his nephew Edwin Droods fianc e and has also caught the eye of the high-spirited and hot-tempered Neville Landless. Edwin and Melville take an instant dislike to one another. When Edwin Drood disappears under mysterious circumstances suspicions abound about Uncle John and Neville being possible killers. Follow this intriguing tale through the opium dens of Cloisterham and learn of the secret double drug-fueled life of Uncle Jasper who is clearly not the respectable choirmaster he appears to be.

First published in 1798, it distinguishes the true beginning of his career as a writer.[1] Wieland is sometimes considered the first American Gothic novel. It has often been linked to Caleb Williams by William Godwin. Godwins influence is clear, but Browns writing is unique in its style
Description Good Reads: Called a “remarkable story” by John Greenleaf Whittier and described by John Keats as “very powerful,” Wieland, Charles Brockden Browns disturbing 1798 tale of terror, is a masterpiece involving spontaneous combustion, disembodied voices, religious mania, and a gruesome murder based on a real-life incident.

Description Original: Charles Brockden Brown s first major novel is often considered one of the first instances of Gothic Fiction. This 1798 terrifying story tells of a gruesome murder based on a real-life case that dealt with religious mania, spontaneous combustion, and disembodied voices. Joyce Carol Oates describes Wieland as “a nightmare expression of the fulfillment of repressed desire, anticipating Edgar Allan Poes similarly claustrophobic tales of the grotesque.” In terms of overall content, this is a “how-to” story chronicling a typical English-speaking mans experiences in years spent traveling between Ireland and the West Indies searching for lost love. Charles isnt sure where hes going with this book until it takes him to Jamaica, where he meets his “mother”, Aunt Polly. Once there, he engages in a correspondence with her in which he describes his life from that time and captures the complex emotions of a family man during that time. Several years later, while on a West Coast voyage with a ship full of West Indians, he witnesses the murder of a West Indian girl by cannibals, who sell women as female slaves. While on this trip, Charles meets up with the son of the family, Michael Martin, who is already a well-established writer on his own and has been to America only once but has no idea what he wants to do. Michaels sister, Flora, who is a talented writer, is also aboard the ship with her husband, Frank Martin. Because of their situation, they end up staying behind in the hope of finding someone who will take them home. This leads to a long-lasting relationship between them, which eventually will produce one of the most important themes throughout the novel: their separation and then their reunion as fate decides the ultimate outcome. This lengthy and fascinating novel tells the tale of a mans search for the meaning of life. Charles discovers a new side to himself while on emotional and spontaneous combustion. He comes to realize that life does not have to be so painful and full of sorrows and death. The words of this engaging and insightful author introduce readers to a unique character whose words become an integral aspect of their lives.

Description Good Reads: A dictionary of the vulgar tongue dating from 1811. If you need to extend your verbal eloquence to include vulgarity from 1811, this is the book for you.
Description Penquin: n/a
Additional Research: amazon – The 1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue, was written by Francis Grose (a British soldier) just after the American Revolution. The word “vulgar” means slang, though some of them are vulgar. This book was banned in military camps at the time. This book is hysterical, both educational and entertaining. It shows how normal people spoke over 200 years ago, and provides endless possibilities for insulting friends. It is an old dictionary of words that will “pitch kettle” (confound) people if you actually use them, and others are still around, like “to catch a crab” (to fall backwards by missing ones stroke in rowing). If you are into quirky dictionaries like this, then youll enjoy it. https://www.rjjulia.com/ – 1811 Dictionary in the Vulgar Tongue is a great book by Francis Grose . A dictionary Of buckish slang, university wit, and pickpocket eloquence, from 1811, featuring various vulgar words and their definitions. Completely hilarious The merit of Captain Groses Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue has been long and universally acknowledged. But its circulation was confined almost exclusively to the lower orders of society: he was not aware, at the time of its compilation, that our young men of fashion would at no very distant period be as distinguished for the vulgarity of their jargon as the inhabitants of Newgate; and he therefore conceived it superfluous to incorporate with his work the few examples of fashionable slang that might occur to his observation. 1811 Dictionary by Francis Grose is a novel highly recommended to read.

Description Good Reads: These papers, originally given as lectures, make no pretence to the solution of the social or political problems with which they are concerned. They indicate rather a certain standpoint or attitude of mind from which these and like questions may be viewed, one which may find acceptance with only a few of my readers. Even those who are friendly may consider it too idealistic; those who are adverse will employ other and harder terms. With regard to that standpoint, while not wishing to avert criticism, I would like to secure understanding; and if a few words of general application can make that more possible it may be well to offer them here. Whether these lectures were primarily intended for the pulpit or the platform it would be hard to say. Most of them have been given in both places: and their drawback to some who heard them in the former was (I have been told) their occasional tendency to make the congregation laugh. That in itself is no special recommendation; it takes so much less to make a congregation laugh than an audience.

Description wiki: The Leavenworth Case (1878), subtitled A Lawyers Story, is an American detective novel and the first novel by Anna Katharine Green. Set in New York City, it concerns the murder of a retired merchant, Horatio Leavenworth, in his New York mansion. The popular[1] novel introduced the detective Ebenezer Gryce, and was influential in the development of the detective novel. In her autobiography, Agatha Christie cited it as an influence on her own fiction
Description Good Reads: The Leavenworth Case is the first novel of Anna Katharine Green, an American poet and novelist, who was one of the first writers of detective fiction in America, and distinguished herself for writing well plotted, accurate legal thrillers. Green is credited with many firsts. With the character Ebenezer Gryce of the New York Metropolitan Police Force, Green developed the series detective. Amelia Butterworth, a nosy society spinster who assists Gryce in three novels, is the prototype for Miss Marple, Miss Silver and other similar mystery solving female characters. And with Violet Strange, a debutante with a secret life as a sleuth, she invented the girl detective. The Leavenworth Case predates the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes by nine years, yet it feels much more modern. Although it bears the romantic sentimentalism of its time, the story possesses a never seen before mastery of detection.
Description Penquin: ABOUT THE LEAVENWORTH CASE The classic genre-defining whodunit, by the mother of the detective novel Introducing the first American series detective, Ebenezer Gryce, The Leavenworth Case was published nine years before the debut of Sherlock Holmes, and made author Anna Katharine Green an enormously popular and influential writer who changed the mystery genre forever. Showcasing Green s verve and style, The Leavenworth Case opens with the shocking murder of Horatio Leavenworth, a wealthy New York merchant, philanthropist, and well-known member of the community. His favorite niece, Mary, is to inherit his fortune, and all of the evidence seems to implicate her or her sister. Yet surprises greet Gryce at every turn-even before the second murder.

Description Original: Before there was Sherlock Holmes, there was Ebenezer Gryce. Before there was Miss Marples, Miss Silver, or Jessica Fletcher (Murder She Wrote) there was Amelia Butterworth. We meet Gryce, a NY Metropolitan detective, and Butterworth, a nosy spinster who proves invaluable in assisting him, in the Leavenworth case. A wealthy merchant, Horatio Leavenworth, has been murdered in New York. The death of this popular philanthropist shocks the community, and all of the evidence seems to lead to his nieces one of whom is to inherit the fortune, but nothing is as it seems in this suspenseful groundbreaking mystery. Anna Katharine Green has been called the Mother of the Detective Novel. The Leavenworth Case is the first installment in the first American detective series ever. Green was enormously influential in the genre and a very popular writer, known for her well-plotted and legally accurate depictions of investigations and trials. Description wiki: is an epistolary novel first published in 1740 by English writer Samuel Richardson. Considered one of the first true English novels, it serves as Richardsons version of conduct literature about marriage. Pamela tells the story of a fifteen-year-old maidservant named Pamela Andrews, whose employer, Mr. B, a wealthy landowner, makes unwanted and inappropriate advances towards her after the death of his mother. Pamela strives to reconcile her strong religious training with her desire for the approval of her employer in a series of letters and, later in the novel, journal entries all addressed to her impoverished parents. After various unsuccessful attempts at seduction, a series of sexual assaults, and an extended period of kidnapping, the rakish Mr. B eventually reforms and makes Pamela a sincere proposal of marriage. In the novels second part Pamela marries Mr. B and tries to acclimatize to her new position in upper-class society. The full title, Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded, makes plain Richardsons moral purpose. A best-seller of its time, Pamela was widely read but was also criticized for its perceived licentiousness and disregard for class barriers. The action of the novel is told through letters and journal entries from Pamela to her parents. Two years after the publication of Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded, Richardson published a sequel, Pamela in her Exalted Condition (1742). He revisited the theme of the rake in his Clarissa (1748), and sought to create a “male Pamela” in Sir Charles Grandison (1753). Since Ian Watt discussed it in The Rise of the Novel: Studies in Defoe, Richardson and Fielding in 1957, literary critics and historians have generally agreed that Pamela played a critical role in the development of the novel in
