Charles Brockden Brown s first major novel is often considered one of the first instances of Gothic Fiction. This 1798 terrifying story tells of a gruesome murder based on a real-life case that dealt with religious mania, spontaneous combustion, and disembodied voices.

Joyce Carol Oates describes Wieland as "a nightmare expression of the fulfillment of repressed desire, anticipating Edgar Allan Poes similarly claustrophobic tales of the grotesque."

In terms of overall content, this is a "how-to" story chronicling a typical English-speaking mans experiences in years spent traveling between Ireland and the West Indies searching for lost love. Charles isnt sure where hes going with this book until it takes him to Jamaica, where he meets his "mother", Aunt Polly. Once there, he engages in a correspondence with her in which he describes his life from that time and captures the complex emotions of a family man during that time. Several years later, while on a West Coast voyage with a ship full of West Indians, he witnesses the murder of a West Indian girl by cannibals, who sell women as female slaves.

While on this trip, Charles meets up with the son of the family, Michael Martin, who is already a well-established writer on his own and has been to America only once but has no idea what he wants to do. Michaels sister, Flora, who is a talented writer, is also aboard the ship with her husband, Frank Martin. Because of their situation, they end up staying behind in the hope of finding someone who will take them home. This leads to a long-lasting relationship between them, which eventually will produce one of the most important themes throughout the novel: their separation and then their reunion as fate decides the ultimate outcome.

This lengthy and fascinating novel tells the tale of a mans search for the meaning of life. Charles discovers a new side to himself while on emotional and spontaneous combustion. He comes to realize that life does not have to be so painful and full of sorrows and death. The words of this engaging and insightful author introduce readers to a unique character whose words become an integral aspect of their lives.
