Description wiki: Songs of Innocence and of Experience[1] is a collection of illustrated poems by William Blake. It appeared in two phases: a few first copies were printed and illuminated by Blake himself in 1789; five years later he bound these poems with a set of new poems in a volume titled Songs of Innocence and of Experience Shewing the Two Contrary States of the Human Soul. Blake was also a painter before the creation of Songs of Innocence and Experience and had painted such subjects as Oberon, Titania, and Puck dancing with fairies. “Innocence” and “Experience” are definitions of consciousness that rethink Miltons existential-mythic states of “Paradise” and “Fall”. Often, interpretations of this collection centre around a mythical dualism, where “Innocence” represents the “unfallen world” and “Experience” represents the “fallen world”.[2] Blake categorizes our modes of perception that tend to coordinate with a chronology that would become standard in Romanticism: childhood is a state of protected innocence rather than original sin, but not immune to the fallen world and its institutions. This world sometimes impinges on childhood itself, and in any event becomes known through “experience”, a state of being marked by the loss of childhood vitality, by fear and inhibition, by social and political corruption and by the manifold oppression of Church, State and the ruling classes. The volumes “Contrary States” are sometimes signalled by patently repeated or contrasted titles: in Innocence, Infant Joy, in Experience, Infant Sorrow; in Innocence, The Lamb, in Experience, The Fly and The Tyger. The stark simplicity of poems such as The Chimney Sweeper and The Little Black Boy display Blakes acute sensibility to the realities of poverty and exploitation that accompanied the “Dark Satanic Mills” of the Industrial Revolution.[3]
Description Good Reads: As both painter and poet, William Blake (1757 1827) was a powerful and visionary artist whose two early collections of poetry, Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience, contain memorable lyric verses embodying the emerging spirit of Romanticism. The two works were published together in 1794 with the subtitle, “Shewing the Two Contrary States of the Human Soul.” The poems of Songs of Innocence describe childhood states of naturalness and purity in delicately beautiful lyrics that reveal a childs unspoiled and beatific view of life and human nature. In Songs of Experience the mood and tone darken, the poems suggesting the bitter corruptions and disillusionment that await the innocent. The contrast between the two sets of lyrics is perhaps at its most acute in the poems “The Lamb” and “The Tyger,” the latter ultimately expressing wonderment at the seemingly paradoxical coexistence of good and evil. The full texts of all the poems in the 1794 edition of both collections are included in this volume.

Description Original: Poet and painter, William Blake, was a visionary artist. This collection of poetry showcase lyric verses that embody the bourgeoning spirit of Romanticism. The original works were subtitled, “Shewing the Two Contrary States of the Human Soul.” Often, interpretations of this collection center around a mythical dualism, where “Innocence” represents the “unfallen world” and “Experience” represents the “fallen world”. Childlike views of the world and human nature give way to the disillusionment and corruption that experience can bring about. The Tyger and the Lamb most fully express these themes.

Description wiki: The Personal History, Adventures, Experience and Observation of David Copperfield the Younger of Blunderstone Rookery (Which He Never Meant to Publish on Any Account), commonly known as David Copperfield,[N 1] is a novel in the bildungsroman genre by Charles Dickens, narrated by the eponymous David Copperfield, detailing his adventures in his journey from infancy to maturity. It was first published as a serial in 1849 50, and as a book in 1850. David Copperfield is also an autobiographical novel:[2] “a very complicated weaving of truth and invention”,[3] with events following Dickenss own life.[4] Of the books he wrote, it was his favourite.[5] Called “the triumph of the art of Dickens”,[6][7] it marks a turning point in his work, separating the novels of youth and those of maturity.[8] At first glance, the work is modelled on 18th-century “personal histories” that were very popular, like Henry Fieldings Joseph Andrews or Tom Jones, but David Copperfield is a more carefully structured work. It begins, like other novels by Dickens, with a bleak picture of childhood in Victorian England, followed by young Copperfields slow social ascent, as he painfully provides for his aunt, while continuing his studies.[9] Dickens wrote without an outline, unlike his previous novel, Dombey and Son. Some aspects of the story were fixed in his mind from the start, but others were undecided until the serial publications were underway.[10] The novel has a primary theme of growth and change, but Dickens also satirises many aspects of Victorian life. These include the plight of prostitutes, the status of women in marriage, class structure, the criminal justice system, the quality of schools and the employment of children in factories
Description Good Reads: David Copperfield is the story of a young mans adventures on his journey from an unhappy and impoverished childhood to the discovery of his vocation as a successful novelist. Among the gloriously vivid cast of characters he encounters are his tyrannical stepfather, Mr Murdstone; his brilliant, but ultimately unworthy school-friend James Steerforth; his formidable aunt, Betsey Trotwood; the eternally humble, yet treacherous Uriah Heep; frivolous, enchanting Dora Spenlow; and the magnificently impecunious Wilkins Micawber, one of literatures great comic creations. In David Copperfield – the novel he described as his favourite child – Dickens drew revealingly on his own experiences to create one of the most exuberant and enduringly popular works, filled with tragedy and comedy in equal measure.
Description Penquin: This is the novel Dickens regarded as his favourite child and is considered his most autobiographical. As David recounts his experiences from childhood to the discovery of his vocation as a successful novelist, Dickens draws openly and revealingly on his own life. Among the gloriously vivid cast of characters are Rosa Dartle, Dora, Steerforth, and the umble Uriah Heep, along with Mr. Micawber, a portrait of Dickens s own father that evokes a mixture of love, nostalgia, and guilt.

Description Original: Charles Dickens described his novel, David Copperfield, as his favorite child. His most autobiographical novel tells the story of the journey of a young man from impoverished and unhappy childhood to his eventual success as a novelist. The character Mr. Micaweber, one of the greatest comedic characters in all of literature, gives the reader a glimpse into Dicken s own father, a beautiful mixture of nostalgia, guilt and love. The novel is filled with gloriously written characters who surround him on his journey. This rags to riches tale, with its mix of tragedy and comedy and ultimate success is one of Dickens most popular and enduring works.
