It tells the story of the Baltimore Gun Club, a post-American Civil War society of weapons enthusiasts, and their attempts to build an enormous Columbiad space gun and launch three people the Gun Clubs president, his Philadelphian armor-making rival, and a French poet in a projectile with the goal of a Moon landing. Five years later, Verne wrote a sequel called Around the Moon. The story is also notable in that Verne attempted to do some rough calculations as to the requirements for the cannon and in that, considering the comparative lack of empirical data on the subject at the time, some of his figures are remarkably accurate. However, his scenario turned out to be impractical for safe human space travel since a much longer barrel would have been required to reach escape velocity while limiting acceleration to survivable limits for the passengers. The character of Michel Ardan, the French member of the party in the novel, was inspired by the real-life photographer F lix Nadar.

Description Good Reads: Vernes 1865 tale of a trip to the moon is (as youd expect from Verne) great fun, even if bits of it now seem, in retrospect, a little strange. Our rocket ship gets shot out of a cannon? To the moon? Goodness! But in other ways its full of eerie bits of business that turned out to be very near reality: he had the cost, when you adjust for inflation, almost exactly right. There are other similarities, too. Vernes cannon was named the Columbiad; the Apollo 11 command module was named Columbia. Apollo 11 had a three-person crew, just as Vernes did; and both blasted off from the American state of Florida. Even the return to earth happened in more-or-less the same place. Coincidence — or fact!? We say youll have to read this story yourself to judge

Description Penquin: ABOUT FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON Written almost a century before the daring flights of the astronauts, Jules Verne s prophetic novel of man s race to the stars is a classic adventure tale enlivened by broad satire and scientific acumen. When the members of the elite Baltimore Gun Club find themselves lacking any urgent assignments at the close of the Civil War, their president, Impey Barbicane, proposes that they build a gun big enough to launch a rocket to the moon. But when Barbicane s adversary places a huge wager that the project will fail and a daring volunteer elevates the mission to a manned flight, one man s dream turns into an international space race. A story of rip-roaring action, humor, and wild imagination, From the Earth to the Moon is as uncanny in its accuracy and as filled with authentic detail and startling immediacy as Verne s timeless masterpieces 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Around the World in Eighty Days.

    Additional Research:

Description Original: Was Jules Verne psychic? His 1865 novel about a manned rocket ship that travels from the Earth to the Moon is downright eerie in its resemblance to the real-life Earth to the Moon adventure some 100 years later. In the story members of the Baltimore Gun Club, a post-American Civil War society of weapons enthusiasts, attempt to build an enormous space gun to launch three people into space in a projectile and land them on the Moon. The ship they use is called the Columbiad (Columbia was the name of the Apollo 11 command module). The crew of the Columbiad had three space travelers, as did the Columbia when it landed on the moon in 1969. Both spaceships started their journey in the state of Florida and the landing remarkably in the same general area. Even in relation to the crazy part of the idea where Verne imagined launching this projectile from a cannon, the rough calculations he made as to the requirements need for this to work were remarkably accurate considering the comparative lack of empirical data on the subject at the time.

Description wiki: Looking Backward: 2000 1887 is a utopian novel by Edward Bellamy, a journalist and writer from Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts; it was first published in 1888.[1] It was the third largest bestseller of its time, after Uncle Toms Cabin and Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ.[2] It influenced many intellectuals, and appears by title in many socialist writings of the day. “It is one of the few books ever published that created almost immediately on its appearance a political mass movement”.[3] In the United States alone, over 162 “Bellamy Clubs” sprang up to discuss and propagate the books ideas.[4] Owing to its commitment to the nationalization of private property and the desire to avoid use of the term “socialism”, this political movement came to be known as Nationalism not to be confused with the political concept of nationalism.[5] The novel also inspired several utopian communities.

Description Good Reads: Edward Bellamys classic look at the future has been translated into over twenty languages and is the most widely read novel of its time. A young Boston gentleman is mysteriously transported from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century — from a world of war and want to one of peace and plenty. This brilliant vision became the blueprint of utopia that stimulated some of the greatest thinkers of our age

The year is 2000. The place: Utopian America. The hero: anyone who has ever longed for escape to a better life Translated into more than twenty languages, and the most widely read novel of its time, Looking Backward is more than a brilliant visionary s view of the future. It is a blueprint of the perfect society, a guidebook that stimulated some of the greatest thinkers of our age. Today in the very era it attempted to visualize it is even more compelling than ever.

Description wiki: Flower Fables was the first work published by Louisa May Alcott and appeared on December 9, 1854. The book was a compilation of fanciful stories first written six years earlier for Ellen Emerson (daughter of Ralph Waldo Emerson). The book was published in an edition of 1600 and though Alcott thought it “sold very well”, she received only about $35 from the Boston publisher, George Briggs.[1]

Description Good Reads: Flower Fables by Louisa May Alcott Flower Fables contains wildly imaginative stories that grew out of Alcotts experience as a storyteller to the children of her Concord, Connecticut, neighbors. Through these enticing encounters with fairies, elves, and animals, the author creates a foundation for young people based on the themes of love, kindness, and responsibility. A collection of original fairy tales written by the acclaimed Louisa May Alcott. These stories are part of a large body of fantasy fiction the author wrote throughout her career. Each story features adventures of elves and fairy sprites in fairyland and are imbued with the lushness of Alcotts love of the natural world.

Description wiki: Barnaby Rudge: A Tale of the Riots of Eighty (commonly known as Barnaby Rudge) is a historical novel by British novelist Charles Dickens. Barnaby Rudge was one of two novels (the other was The Old Curiosity Shop) that Dickens published in his short-lived (1840 1841) weekly serial Master Humphreys Clock. Barnaby Rudge is largely set during the Gordon Riots of 1780. Barnaby Rudge was the fifth of Dickens novels to be published. It had initially been planned to appear as his first, but changes of publisher led to many delays, and it first appeared in serial form in the Clock from February to November 1841. It was Dickens first historical novel. His only other is A Tale of Two Cities (1859), also set in revolutionary times.[2] It is one of his less popular novels[3] and has rarely been adapted for film or television. The last production was a 1960 BBC production; prior to that, silent films were made in 1911 and 1915.

Description Good Reads: Charles Dickens s first historical novel set during the anti-Catholic riots of 1780 is an unparalleled portrayal of the terror of a rampaging mob, seen through the eyes of the individuals swept up in the chaos. Those individuals include Emma, a Catholic, and Edward, a Protestant, whose forbidden love weaves through the heart of the story; and the simpleminded Barnaby, one of the riot leaders, whose fate is tied to a mysterious murder and whose beloved pet raven, Grip, embodies the mystical power of innocence. The story encompasses both the rarified aristocratic world and the volatile streets and nightmarish underbelly of London, which Dickens characteristically portrays in vivid, pulsating detail. But the real focus of the book is on the riots themselves, depicted with an extraordinary energy and redolent of the dangers, the mindlessness, and the possibilities both beneficial and brutal of the mob. One of the lesser-known novels, Barnaby Rudge is nonetheless among the most brilliant and most terrifying in Dickens s oeuvre. (less)

Description Original: Barnaby Rudge: A Tale of the Riots of Eighty (commonly known as Barnaby Rudge) is a historical novel by British novelist Charles Dickens. Set in 1780 it portrays the Anti-Catholic riots and the terror of the mobs rampaging through the cities through the eyes of those who have been caught up in the chaos. At the center of the novel is the forbidden love story of Edward, a Protestant, and Emma, a Catholic. In his usual style, Dickens vividly contrasts the terrifying underbelly of London with its volatile streets against the rarified air of the London aristocratic world. The riots themselves become a main character as the dangers and pulsating energy of the mob mixes with the possibilities both brutal and beneficial that protests can create. Sub-titled A Tale of the Riots of Eighty, the themes in this novel are still relevant to today s readers some 150 years later. This was Charles Dickens first historical novel followed later by a Tale of Two Cities, and though it is not as well-known as some of his other classics, it has been said to be one of his most compelling novels in any of his genres. Barnaby Rudge is the third of the books written by Charles Dickens and is well worth reading. The story takes place in Barnaby, England, near the Irwell. The main character is called the “Barnacle.” barnacle is a name that is given to a particular individual who, among other things, finds himself in a life-threatening situation in which he has to take on another persons identity. It turns out that this is not the person he intended to impersonate, and he is not happy about this. This novel reveals that Barnaby has unfinished business. He contacts Mark Rogaine, a friend who lives nearby. He teaches him about the importance of having a good health record. They then contact a Mr. Hawkin, who tells them that Barnabys great-granduncle was an alcoholic who died young. They then go to an auction to find a cure for Barnabys health problem. It turns out that it is “the famous stinky beverage.” Eventually, Barnaby is saved from an “accident” wherein a rhino tries to attack him. We can see Barnabys dialogue with Mr. Pickwick as they discuss their encounter. This is followed by a section where Mr. Pickwick gets hypnotized by a vampire, whose motive seems unknown.

Description wiki: The Sea-Wolf is a 1904 psychological adventure novel by American writer Jack London. The books protagonist, Humphrey Van Weyden, is a literary critic who is a survivor of an ocean collision and who comes under the dominance of Wolf Larsen, the powerful and amoral sea captain who rescues him. Its first printing of forty thousand copies was immediately sold out before publication on the strength of Londons previous The Call of the Wild.[1] Ambrose Bierce wrote, “The great thing and it is among the greatest of things is that tremendous creation, Wolf Larsen… the hewing out and setting up of such a figure is enough for a man to do in one lifetime… The love element, with its absurd suppressions, and impossible proprieties, is awful.

Description Good Reads: The Sea-Wolf is a 1904 psychological adventure novel by Jack London about a literary critic Humphrey van Weyden. The story starts with him aboard a San Francisco ferry, called Martinez, which collides with another ship in the fog and sinks. He is set adrift in the Bay, eventually being picked up by Wolf Larsen.Larsen is the captain of a seal-hunting schooner, the Ghost. Brutal and cynical, yet also highly intelligent and intellectual, he rules over his ship and terrorizes the crew with the aid of his exceptionally great physical strength.

Description Penquin: A thrilling epic of a sea voyage and a complex novel of ideas, The Sea-Wolf is a standard-bearer of its genre. It is the vivid story of a gentleman scholar, Humphrey Van Weyden, who is rescued by a seal-hunting schooner after a ferryboat accident in San Francisco Bay. London uses Van Weyden s ordeal at the hands of a schooner s devious crew to explore powerful themes of ambition, courage, and the innate will to survive. The Sea-Wolf also introduces Jack London s most memorable, fully realized character, Wolf Larsen, the schooner s brutal captain, who ruthlessly crushes anyone standing in his way. As Gary Kinder states in his Introduction, “Wolf Larsen is one of the most carefully carved characters in American literature .London, himself, seems as fascinated as the reader with his own creation.”

Description wiki: Two Years Before the Mast is a memoir by the American author Richard Henry Dana Jr., published in 1840, having been written after a two-year sea voyage from Boston to California on a merchant ship starting in 1834. A film adaptation under the same name was released in 1946.

Description Good Reads: Two Years Before the Mast is a book by the American author Richard Henry Dana, Jr. written after a two-year sea voyage starting in 1834. While at Harvard College, Dana had an attack of the measles, which affected his vision. Thinking it might help his sight, Dana, rather than going on a Grand Tour as most of his fellow classmates traditionally did (and unable to afford it anyway) and being something of a non-conformist, left Harvard to enlist as a common sailor on a voyage around Cape Horn on the brig Pilgrim. He returned to Massachusetts two years later aboard the Alert (which left California sooner than the Pilgrim). He kept a diary throughout the voyage, and after returning he wrote a recognized American classic, Two Years Before the Mast, published in 1840, the same year of his admission to the bar.

Description Penquin: Tracing an awe-inspiring oceanic route from Boston, around Cape Horn, to the California coast, Two Years Before the Mast is both a riveting story of adventure and the most eloquent, insightful account we have of life at sea in the early nineteenth century. Richard Henry Dana is only nineteen when he abandons the patrician world of Boston and Harvard for an arduous voyage among real sailors, amid genuine danger. The result is an astonishing read, replete with vivid descriptions of storms, whales, and the ship s mad captain, terrible hardship and magical beauty, and fascinating historical detail, including an intriguing portrait of California before the gold rush. As D. H. Lawrence proclaimed, “Dana s small book is a very great book.”

Description Good Reads: You mean when Ready asked him if we were out of our course? I must say I thought it was a silly question to put. It was the same the other evening about the cargo. If the skipper says were in ballast why not believe him? Why repeat steerage gossip, about mysterious cargoes, at the cuddy table? Captains are always touchy about that sort of thing. I wasnt surprised at his letting out.

Description wiki: H. Beam Piper collected guns and wrote one mystery, Murder in the Gunroom. In 1964, his career apparently on the skids, and prevented by reticence and his Libertarian principles

Description Good Reads: The Lane Fleming collection of early pistols and revolvers was one of the best in the country. When Fleming was found dead on the floor of his locked gunroom, a Confederate-made Colt-type percussion .36 revolver in his hand, the coroners verdict was “death by accident.” But Gladys Fleming had her doubts. Enough at any rate to engage Colonel Jefferson Davis Rand–better known just as Jeff–private detective and a pistol-collector himself, to catalogue, appraise, and negotiate the sale of her late husbands collection. There were a number of people who had wanted the collection. The question was: had anyone wanted it badly enough to kill Fleming? And if so, how had he done it? Here is a mystery, told against the fascinating background of old guns and gun-collecting, which is rapid-fire without being hysterical, exciting without losing its contact with reason, and which introduces a personable and intelligent new private detective. It is a story that will keep your nerves on a hair trigger even if you dont know the difference between a cased pair of Paterson .34s and a Texas .40 with a ramming-lever.

Description wiki: Fu Manchu is pursued from the opium dens of Limehouse in the East End of London to various country estates. We learn that Dr. Fu Manchu is a leading member not of “old China”, the Mandarin class of the Manchu dynasty, or “young China”, a new generation of “youthful and unbalanced reformers” with “western polish” but a “Third Party”. Nayland Smith is outwitted several times by Fu Manchu and thus he reflects more the narrow escapes of the later Bulldog Drummond rather than the “logical” superior approach of the earlier Sherlock Holmes. Fu Manchu is a master poisoner and chemist, a cunning member of the Yellow Peril, “the greatest genius which the powers of evil have put on the earth for centuries”, though his mission is not exactly clear at this stage. He appears to be trying to capture and take back to China the best engineers of Europe for some larger criminal purpose. By the end of the book, Fu Manchus slave girl Karamaneh, a beautiful Arab woman, apparently now in love with Dr Petrie, and her brother Aziz are freed from Fu Manchus captivity and Inspector Weymouth, driven mad by an injection of serum from Fu Manchu, is restored to sanity by Fu Manchu, who appears to have escaped from a fire which destroys the house that he had previously entered.

Description Good Reads: The Insidious Dr. Fu-Manchu is the first title in the famous series of “Yellow Peril” novels published by English writer Sax Rohmer, aka Henry Sarsfield Ward (1883 1959), between 1913 and 1959. The novel, like its many sequels, pits the “evil genius” of the Far East against the British Duo, Denis Nayland Smith and his sidekick Dr. Petrie.

Additional Research: amazon = Sax Rohmer was born on February 15th, 1883 as Arthur Henry Sarsfield in Birmingham to working class parents. Rohmer started his career as a civil servant but soon had ambitions to write full time. Not content with just fiction he wrote poetry, songs as well as comedy sketches for music hall performers. From these varied beginnings he reinvented himself as Sax Rohmer. He first published in 1903, age 20, with the short story The Mysterious Mummy which was published in the magazine Pearson s Weekly. Rohmer published his first book Pause! anonymously in 1910 and followed this, in 1911, with a stint as ghost-writer on the autobiography of Little Tich, the famous music hall entertainer. The serialization of his first Fu Manchu novel, The Mystery of Dr. Fu-Manchu, from October 1912 to June 1913 brought him instant success. The first three Fu Manchu books were published in the four years 1913 1917. Rohmer then put the character on hiatus whilst he attended to other works and characters. It was only after a 14-year absence in 1931 that Rohmer added a fourth to the series with The Daughter of Fu Manchu. The incredible commercial success of Fu Manchu had brought Rohmer both fame and fortune and he wanted to use both to allow him to explore and create other characters as well as other interests. Rohmer also wrote several novels of supernatural horror, including Brood of the Witch-Queen, which has been described as Rohmers masterpiece. Unfortunately, despite his ability to generate income, Rohmer was very poor at managing his wealth and made several very poor business decisions that hobbled him throughout his career. His final success came with a series of novels featuring a female variation on Fu Manchu, Sumuru. This series would run to five novels. After World War II, Rohmer and his wife moved to New York, only returning to London shortly before his death. Sax Rohmer died on June 1st, 1959, due to an outbreak of influenza, ironically named “Asian Flu”.

Description wiki: According to his own account, Sax Rohmer decided to start the Dr Fu Manchu series after his Ouija board spelled out C-H-I-N-A-M-A-N when he asked what would make his fortune.[1] Clive Bloom argues that the portrait of Fu Manchu was based on the popular music hall magician Chung Ling Soo, “a white man in costume who had shaved off his Victorian moustache and donned a Mandarin costume and pigtail”.[2] As for Rohmers theories concerning “Eastern devilry” and “the unemotional cruelty of the Chinese,” [3] he seeks to give them intellectual credentials by referring to the travel writing of Bayard Taylor.[4] Taylor was a would-be ethnographer, who though unversed in Chinese language and culture used the pseudo-science of physiognomy to find in the Chinese race “deeps on deeps of depravity so shocking and horrible, that their character cannot even be hinted.”[5] Rohmers protagonists treat him as an authority. Rohmer wrote 14 novels concerning the villain.[6] The image of “Orientals” invading Western nations became the foundation of Rohmers commercial success, being able to sell 20 million copies in his lifetime.[7]

Description wiki: Martin Eden is a 1909 novel by American author Jack London about a young proletarian autodidact struggling to become a writer. It was first serialized in The Pacific Monthly magazine from September 1908 to September 1909 and then published in book form by Macmillan in September 1909. Eden represents writers frustration with publishers by speculating that when he mails off a manuscript, a “cunning arrangement of cogs” immediately puts it in a new envelope and returns it automatically with a rejection slip.[citation needed] The central theme of Edens developing artistic sensibilities places the novel in the tradition of the K nstlerroman, which narrates an artists formation and development.[1][2][3] Eden differs from London in rejecting socialism, attacking it as “slave morality” and relying on Nietzschean individualism. Nevertheless, in the copy of the novel which he inscribed for Upton Sinclair, London wrote, “One of my motifs, in this book, was an attack on individualism (in the person of the hero). I must have bungled it, for not a single reviewer has discovered it.

Description Good Reads: Alternate cover edition of ISBN 9780140187724 The semiautobiographical Martin Eden is the most vital and original character Jack London ever created. Set in San Francisco, this is the story of Martin Eden, an impoverished seaman who pursues, obsessively and aggressively, dreams of education and literary fame. London, dissatisfied with the rewards of his own success, intended Martin Eden as an attack on individualism and a criticism of ambition; however, much of its status as a classic has been conferred by admirers of its ambitious protagonist. Andrew Sinclairs wide-ranging introduction discusses the conflict between Londons support of socialism and his powerful self-will. Sinclair also explores the parallels and divergences between the life of Martin Eden and that of his creator, focusing on Londons mental depressions and how they affected his depiction of Eden.

Sinclair also explores the parallels and divergences between the life of Martin Eden and that of his creator, focusing on London s mental depressions and how they affected his depiction of Eden. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Description Original: Martin Eden is a 1909 novel by American author Jack London about a young poor seaman who is obsessed with dreams of education and literary fame. London echoes all would-be writer s frustrating speculation that their submission of manuscripts to potential publishers results in a cunning arrangement of cogs that simply puts said manuscript into a new envelope and mails it back with a rejection letter. Semiautobiographical in nature, the character of Martin Eden is seen by many as London s own criticism of ambition and an attack on individualism. Eden is generally considered one of London s most original and intriguing characters.

Description wiki: The People of the Abyss (1903) is a book by Jack London made up of his firsthand account of life in the East End of London.

Description Good Reads: From the authors preface: “The experiences related in this volume fell to me in the summer of 1902. I went down into the underworld of London with an attitude of mind which I may best liken to that of the explorer. I was open to be convinced by the evidence of my eyes, rather than by the teachings of those who had not seen, or by the words of those who had seen and gone before. Further, I took with me certain simple criteria with which to measure the life of the underworld. That which made for more life, for physical and spiritual health, was good; that which made for less life, which hurt, and dwarfed, and distorted life, was bad.”
