Barnaby Rudge: A Tale of the Riots of Eighty (commonly known as Barnaby Rudge) is a historical novel by British novelist Charles Dickens. Set in 1780 it portrays the Anti-Catholic riots and the terror of the mobs rampaging through the cities through the eyes of those who have been caught up in the chaos.  At the center of the novel is the forbidden love story of Edward, a Protestant, and Emma, a Catholic. In his usual style, Dickens vividly contrasts the terrifying underbelly of London with its volatile streets against the rarified air of the London aristocratic world. The riots themselves become a main character as the dangers and pulsating energy of the mob mixes with the possibilities both brutal and beneficial that protests can create.  Sub-titled A Tale of the Riots of Eighty, the themes in this novel are still relevant to today s readers some 150 years later.

This was Charles Dickens first historical novel followed later by a Tale of Two Cities, and though it is not as well-known as some of his other classics, it has been said to be one of his most compelling novels in any of his genres.

Barnaby Rudge is the third of the books written by Charles Dickens and is well worth reading. The story takes place in Barnaby, England, near the Irwell. The main character is called the "Barnacle." barnacle is a name that is given to a particular individual who, among other things, finds himself in a life-threatening situation in which he has to take on another persons identity. It turns out that this is not the person he intended to impersonate, and he is not happy about this.

This novel reveals that Barnaby has unfinished business. He contacts Mark Rogaine, a friend who lives nearby. He teaches him about the importance of having a good health record. They then contact a Mr. Hawkin, who tells them that Barnabys great-granduncle was an alcoholic who died young. They then go to an auction to find a cure for Barnabys health problem. It turns out that it is "the famous stinky beverage."

Eventually, Barnaby is saved from an "accident" wherein a rhino tries to attack him. We can see Barnabys dialogue with Mr. Pickwick as they discuss their encounter. This is followed by a section where Mr. Pickwick gets hypnotized by a vampire, whose motive seems unknown.
