Description wiki: The Little Nugget is a novel by P. G. Wodehouse. It was first published in Munseys Magazine in August 1913, before being published as a book in the UK on 28 August 1913 by Methuen & Co., London, and in the US on 10 January 1914 by W.J. Watt and Company, New York.[1] An earlier version of the story, without the love interest, had appeared as a serial in The Captain between January and March 1913 under the title The Eighteen-Carat Kid; this version was not published in the US until August 1980, when it appeared in a volume entitled The Eighteen-Carat Kid and Other Stories. The Little Nugget was reprinted in the Philadelphia Record on 12 May 1940.
Description Good Reads: The Little Nugget (1913) is one of the novels in which Wodehouse found his feet, a light comic thriller set in an English prep school for the children of the nobility and gentry. Into their midst comes eleven-year-old Ogden Ford, the mouthy, overweight, chain-smoking son of an American millionaire. Ogden (whom we meet again in Piccadilly Jim) is the object of a kidnap attempt which forms the basis of the plot. The comedy arises from Wodehouses favourite topics of Anglo-American misunderstanding and the absurdities of school life.

Description wiki: is a novel by P. G. Wodehouse. The basic plot first appeared in a novella, The Gem Collector, in the December 1909 issue of Ainslees Magazine. It was substantially revised and expanded for publication as a book under the title The Intrusion of Jimmy by W. J. Watt and Co., New York, on 11 May 1910.[1] It was serialised under that title in the British weekly magazine Tit-Bits between 11 June and 10 September[2] before being published as A Gentleman of Leisure by Alston Rivers Ltd, London, on 15 November 1910.[1] There are minor textual differences between the American and British editions of the book.[3] A Gentleman of Leisure was adapted for the stage in 1911 and has twice been filmed, in 1915 and 1923.
Description Good Reads: Sir James Willoughby Pitt and Spike share a common but dark history-one in which both were jewel thieves. While Pitt has reformed, however, Spike still has quite a taste for mischief. When the two men join Spennie at his lavish family estate, not only is Pitt in for more surprises from his past, but he finds his hands full trying to keep the wayward Spike from indulging his larcenous temptations in their luxurious surroundings. Comedy, romance, and crime combine in this hilarious romp through high (and low) society, virtue and vice. Enjoy! Wodehouse is the greatest comic writer ever

The United Kingdom is the country of first publication on 18 October 1907[1] by Cassell and Co., London. Much of the book is a lightly fictionalised account of Wodehouses early career as a writer and journalist in London. Description wiki: Aristotles Poetics (Greek: ???? ????????? Peri poietik s; Latin: De Poetica;[1] c. 335 BC[2]) is the earliest surviving work of dramatic theory and first extant philosophical treatise to focus on literary theory.[3] In this text Aristotle offers an account of ????????, which refers to poetry or more literally “the poetic art,” deriving from the term for “poet; author; maker,” ???????. Aristotle divides the art of poetry into verse drama (to include comedy, tragedy, and the satyr play), lyric poetry, and epic. The genres all share the function of mimesis, or imitation of life, but differ in three ways that Aristotle describes: Differences in music rhythm, harmony, meter and melody. Difference of goodness in the characters. Difference in how the narrative is presented: telling a story or acting it out. The Poetics is primarily concerned with drama, and the analysis of tragedy constitutes the core of the discussion.[4] Although the text is universally acknowledged in the Western critical tradition, “almost every detail about [t]his seminal work has aroused divergent opinions”.[5] Among scholarly debates on the Poetics, the three most prominent have concerned the meanings of catharsis and hamartia (these being the best known), and the question why Aristotle appears to contradict himself between chapters 13 and 1

Description Original: In what is generally considered the earliest surviving work of dramatic theory, Aristotle dissects the elements of character, plot and language in Greek tragedy. Taking the works of Sophocles, Aeschylus and Euripides, the Poetics introduces into literary criticism such integral concepts as mimesis, harartia and katharsis: imitation, error and purification. This is one of the most influential and powerful works of literary criticism in the history of Western literature and has informed all serious discussions about the drama genre ever since.

Description wiki: Garrett Putnam Serviss (March 24, 1851 May 25, 1929) was an American astronomer, popularizer of astronomy, and early science fiction writer. Serviss was born in Sharon Springs, New York[1] and majored in science at Cornell University. He took a law degree at Columbia University but never worked as an attorney. Instead, in 1876 he joined the staff of The New York Sun newspaper, working as a journalist until 1892 under editor Charles Dana. Serviss showed a talent for explaining scientific details in a way that made them clear to the ordinary reader, leading Andrew Carnegie to invite him to deliver The Urania Lectures in 1894 on astronomy, cosmology, geology, and related matters. With Carnegies financial backing, these lectures were illustrated with magic lantern slides and other effects to show eclipses, presumed lunar landscapes, and much else. Serviss toured the United States for over two years delivering these lectures[citation needed], then settled down to become a popular speaker in the New York area.[citation needed] He also wrote a syndicated newspaper column devoted to astronomy and other sciences[citation needed] and wrote frequently for the leading magazines of the day.[citation needed]

Description wiki: Edisons Conquest of Mars is an 1898 science fiction mashup novel by American astronomer and writer Garrett P. Serviss. It was written as a sequel to Fighters from Mars, an unauthorized and heavily altered version of H. G. Wellss 1897 story The War of the Worlds. It has a place in the history of science fiction for its early employment of themes and motifs that later became staples of the genre.[1] The book features Thomas Edison as the primary character, though neither Edison nor H. G. Wells were involved in its creation (although the 2010 edition published by Apogee Books of Canada includes the credit “written in collaboration with Edison”). Set after the devastating Martian attack in the previous story, the novel depicts Edison leading a group of scientists to develop ships and weapons, including a disintegration ray, for the defence of Earth. Edison and company fight the aliens in space and on Mars, eventually causing a flood that defeats the enemy and forces an end to hostilities. Serviss wrote himself into the story as a professor whom Edison consults; also appearing are scientists such as Edward Emerson Barnard, Lord Kelvin, Wilhelm R ntgen, and Silvanus P. Thompson, and heads of state such as Queen Victoria, U.S. President William McKinley, Kaiser Wilhelm II, and Emperor Mutsuhito.[1]
Description Good Reads: Following in the footsteps of one of the greatest science fiction masterpieces ever written, this long-forgotten sequel to “The War of the Worlds” boasts Thomas Edison as its hero. Originally published in the late 1800s, this is one of the rarest and most important cornerstones of the science fiction genre. Turning the original Wells tale on its head, this novel weaves a distinct and astonishing story of humans invading Mars, marking the invention of the space techno-thriller. Presenting a cornucopia of technical ingenuity, this edition marks a variety of firsts in the genre: the first space battle ever to appear in print, the original fictional example of alien abduction, the introduction ofthe theorythat the pyramidswere constructed by extraterrestrials, and the first truly functional spacesuits. Complete and unabridged for the first time everincluding the original illustrationsthis narrative also features an introductory essay by acclaimed author Robert Godwin.”

The writer wishes frankly to say that, in some instances, he has followed the course which all historians are compelled to take by using his imagination to round out the picture. But he is able conscientiously to declare that in the substance of his narrative, as well as in every detail which is specifically described,

Description Good Reads: Edmund answered with uncommon warmth: “If men had not been fools for so many ages they might have done this and more than this long ago. Its enough to make one ashamed of his race! For countless centuries, instead of grasping the power that nature had placed at the disposal of their intelligence, they have idled away their time gabbling about nothing. And even since, at last, they have begun to do something, look at the time that they have wasted upon such petty forces as steam and electricity, burning whole mines of coal and whole lakes of oil and childishly calling upon winds and tides and waterfalls to help them, when they had under their thumbs the limitless energy of the atoms and no more understood it than a baby understands what makes its whistle scream! Its inter-atomic force that has brought us out here and that is going to carry us a great deal farther.” We simply listened in silence; for what could we say? The facts were more eloquent than any words and called for no commentary. Seeing us speechless, Edmund resumed in a different tone: “We made a fairly good run during the night. . . .”

Additional Research: A Columbus of Space” is dedicated to people who read Jules Verne and it is written in his style. The novel features an independent scientist who discovers the secret of “inter-atomic energy”. Additional Research: We know that as soon as interplanetary travel is possible, expeditions from the Earth will be ranging the length and breadth of the solar system searching out the thousands of wonders that are to be discovered. It is quite possible that some of the explorers, whether through accident or desire, may colonize the other planets and develop under new and unusual conditions a new branch of the human race. It is doubtlessly true that if each of the solar planets were to be colonized, at the end of several hundred centuries there would be nine races of human beings

Description Good Reads: Curiosities of the Sky is a newly annotated edition of the 1909 popular astronomy classic. All of the original text, photographs and diagrams are preserved, and new text added providing updates in the progress of astronomy since the book was first published. Garrett Serviss wrote with a firm understanding of the science of the period. He was also graced with a delightful imagination and unequaled power of poetic expression in describing the wonders and mysteries of the universe.

Additional Research: What Froude says of history is true also of astronomy: it is the most impressive where it transcends explanation. It is not the mathematics of astronomy, but the wonder and the mystery that seize upon the imagination. The calculation of an eclipse owes all its prestige to the sublimity of its data; the operation, in itself, requires no more mental effort than the preparation of a railway time-table. The dominion which astronomy has always held over the minds of men is akin to that of poetry; when the former becomes merely instructive and the latter purely didactic, both lose their power over the imagination.

Description wiki: The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex is a book by English naturalist Charles Darwin, first published in 1871, which applies evolutionary theory to human evolution, and details his theory of sexual selection, a form of biological adaptation distinct from, yet interconnected with, natural selection. The book discusses many related issues, including evolutionary psychology, evolutionary ethics, evolutionary musicology, differences between human races, differences between sexes, the dominant role of women in mate choice, and the relevance of the evolutionary theory to society.
