The Velveteen Rabbit is a British children's book written by Margery Williams and illustrated
by William Nicholson. It chronicles the story of a discarded and threadbare stuffed rabbit who
becomes a treasured Real companion to a child who will love him forever in this classic tale about
boundless love. The book was first published in 1922 and was awarded the IRA/CBC Children's
Choice award. Based on a 2007 online poll, the National Education Association voted the book #28
on the "Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children."
"Real isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you. When a
child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you
become Real."
"Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit.
