Description Good Reads: Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. (1841 1935) is generally considered one of the two greatest justices of the United States Supreme Court, Chief Justice John Marshall being the other. In more than 2000 opinions, he delineated an impressive legal philosophy that profoundly influenced American jurisprudence, particularly in the area of civil liberties and judicial restraint. At the same time, his abilities as a prose stylist earned him a position among the literary elite. In The Common Law, derived from a series of lectures delivered at the Lowell Institute in Boston, Holmes systematized his early legal doctrines. The result was an enduring classic of legal philosophy that continues to be read and consulted over a century later. Beginning with historical forms of liability (thought to have originated in the desire for vengeance in ancient Roman and Germanic blood feuds), the book goes on to discuss criminal law, torts, bails, possession and ownership, contracts, successions, and many other aspects of civil and criminal law. Encompassing Holmess profound, wide-ranging knowledge of the law in its historical aspects, yet written in a manner easily accessible to the layman, The Common Law provoked this observation from another famed jurist; “The book is a classic in the sense that its stock of ideas has been absorbed and become part of common juristic thought they placed law in a perspective which legal scholarship ever since has merely confirmed.” Felix Frankfurter, Of Law and Men. Now the influential ideas and judicial theory of Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. can be studied and appreciated in this superb edition the only one in print of his magnum opus. This edition also features a new introduction by Professor Sheldon M. Novick, author of Honorable Justice: The Life of Oliver Wendell Holmes. First published in 1881, this book is still indispensable reading for lawyers, political scientists, historians, general readers anyone interested in the origins, development, and continuing evolution of the laws that govern human society.

Description wiki: Tales from Shakespeare is an English childrens book written by the siblings Charles and Mary Lamb in 1807, intended “for the use of young persons”[1] while retaining as much Shakespearean language as possible.[2] Mary Lamb was responsible for retelling the comedies and Charles the tragedies.[3] They omitted the more complex historical tales, including all Roman plays, and modified those they chose to retell in a manner sensitive to the needs of young children, but without resorting to actual censoring. However, subplots and sexual references were removed.[3] They wrote the preface together. Marina Warner, in her introduction to the 2007 Penguin Classics edition, claims that Mary did not get her name on the title page till the seventh edition in 1838.[4] Despite its original target audience, “very young” children from the early twenty-first century might find this book a challenging read, and alternatives are available. Nevertheless, the retelling of Lamb siblings remains uniquely faithful to the original[3] and as such can be useful to children when they read or learn the plays as Shakespeare wrote them

Description wiki: The Country of the Blind and Other Stories is a collection of thirty-three fantasy and science fiction short stories written by the English author H. G. Wells between 1894 and 1909. It was first published by Thomas Nelson and Sons in 1911.[1] All the stories had first been published in various weekly and monthly periodicals. Twenty-seven of the stories had also been previously published in five earlier story collections by Wells. The title of this collection refers to one of Wellss best known short stories, “The Country of the Blind”, which is included in this book.
Description Good Reads: The Dover Thrift Edition: “The Country of the Blind” (1904) “The Star” (1897) “The New Accelerator” (1901) “The Remarkable Case of Davidsons Eyes” (1895) “Under the Knife” (1896) “The Queer Story of Brownlows Newspaper” (1932)
Description Penquin: Herbert George Wells was perhaps best known as the author of such classic works of science fiction as The Time Machine and War of the Worlds. But it was in his short stories, written when he was a young man embarking on a literary career, that he first explored the enormous potential of the scientific discoveries of the day. He described his stories as a miscellany of inventions, yet his enthusiasm for science was tempered by an awareness of its horrifying destructive powers and the threat it could pose to the human race. A consummate storyteller, he made fantastic creatures and machines entirely believable; and, by placing ordinary men and women in extraordinary situations, he explored, with humor, what it means to be alive in a century of rapid scientific progress. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Description wiki: The First Men in the Moon is a scientific romance by the English author H. G. Wells, originally serialised in The Strand Magazine from December 1900 to August 1901 and published in hardcover in 1901,[2] who called it one of his “fantastic stories”.[3] The novel tells the story of a journey to the Moon undertaken by the two protagonists: a businessman narrator, Mr. Bedford; and an eccentric scientist, Mr. Cavor. Bedford and Cavor discover that the Moon is inhabited by a sophisticated extraterrestrial civilisation of insect-like creatures they call “Selenites”.
Description Good Reads: When penniless businessman Mr Bedford retreats to the Kent coast to write a play, he meets by chance the brilliant Dr Cavor, an absent-minded scientist on the brink of developing a material that blocks gravity. Cavor soon succeeds in his experiments, only to tell a stunned Bedford the invention makes possible one of the oldest dreams of humanity: a journey to the moon. With Bedford motivated by money, and Cavor by the desire for knowledge, the two embark on the expedition. But neither are prepared for what they find – a world of freezing nights, boiling days and sinister alien life, on which they may be trapped forever.
Description Penquin: Why do people read science fiction? In hopes of receiving such writing as this a ravishingly accurate vision of things unseen; an utterly unexpected yet necessary beauty. So says Ursula K. Le Guin in her Introduction to The First Men in the Moon, H. G. Wells s 1901 tale of space travel. Heavily criticized upon publication for its fantastic ideas, it is now justly considered a science fiction classic. Cavor, a brilliant scientist who accidentally produces a gravity-defying substance, builds a spaceship and, along with the materialistic Bedford, travels to the moon. The coldly intellectual Cavor seeks knowledge, while Bedford seeks fortune. Instead of insight and gold they encounter the Selenites, a horrifying race of biologically engineered creatures who viciously, and successfully, defend their home.

The book, which had a full title of Little Wars: a game for boys from twelve years of age to one hundred and fifty and for that more intelligent sort of girl who likes boys games and books, provided simple rules for miniature wargaming.[1] Although first printed in 1913, an updated version was released in 2004. It is mentioned in one of Wells other books, Joan and Peter, where, during the Great War, a sensitive young man named Bunny Cuspard tries his best to compare his life in the army as a larger version of the manual.

Description Good Reads: Is there a fourth dimension in which a human being may be able to see his fellow-men, to watch their actions, to feel as though he himself were participating, yet be unable to touch them, hear them, or communicate with them? What happens to us after death? Are there ghosts? Round these questions H. G. Wells has written fifteen tales, which, with gathering momentum, finally overwhelm us in a torrent of logical, seemingly convincing facts. The author, who has obviously pondered deeply the problem of the supernatural, leaves the reader to judge for himself the credibility of the tales. Introduction by Frank Wells. Additional Research: xcerpt from Tales of the Unexpected I was surprised to hear a queer sort of laugh, and saw Davidson standing unsteadily in the middle of the room, with a dazzled look on his face. My first impression was that he was drunk. He did not notice me. He was clawing out at something invisible a yard in front of his face. He put out his hand, slowly, rather hesitatingly, and then clutched nothing. whats come to it? he said. He held up his hands to his face, fingers spread out. great Scott! he said. The thing happened three or four years ago, when every one swore by that personage. Then he began raising his feet clumsily, as though he had expected to find them glued to the ?oor. Description wiki: The Lady with the Dog” (Russian: ???? ? ????????, romanized: Dama s sobachkoy)[a] is a short story by Anton Chekhov. First published in 1899, it describes an adulterous affair between an unhappily married Moscow banker and a young married woman which begins while both are vacationing alone in Yalta. It is one of Chekhovs most famous pieces of short fiction, and Vladimir Nabokov considered it to be one of the greatest short stories ever written.[
Description Good Reads: In the final years of his prominent life, Chekhov had reached the height of his powers as a dramatist, and also produced some of the stories that rank among his masterpieces. The poignant The Lady with the Little Dog and About Love examine the nature of love outside of marriage – its romantic idealism and the fear of disillusionment. And in stories such as Peasants, The House with the Mezzanine and My Life Chekhov paints a vivid picture of the conditions of the poor and of their powerlessness in the face of exploitation and hardship. With the works collected here, Chekhov moved away from the realism of his earlier tales – developing a broader range of characters and subject matter, while forging the spare minimalist style that would inspire modern short-story writers such as Hemingway and Faulkner. Contains: The House with the Mezzanine Peasants Man in a Case Gooseberries About Love A Visit to Friends Ionych My Life The Lady with the Little Dog In the Ravine Disturbing the Balance The Bishop The Bride

Description wiki: The Witcher (Polish: Wied?min, pronounced [?v??d??m?in]) is a series of six fantasy novels and 15 short stories written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. The series revolves around the eponymous “witcher,” Geralt of Rivia. In Sapkowskis works, “witchers” are beast hunters who develop supernatural abilities at a young age to battle wild beasts and monsters. The Witcher began with a titular 1986 short story that Sapkowski entered into a competition held by Fantastyka magazine, marking his debut as an author. Due to reader demand, Sapkowski wrote 14 more stories before starting a series of novels in 1994. Known as The Witcher Saga, he wrote one book a year until the fifth and final installment in 1999. A standalone prequel novel, Season of Storms, was published in 2013. The books have been described as having a cult following in Poland and Central and Eastern European countries.[1][2] They have been translated into 37 languages and sold over 15 million copies worldwide as of December 2019.[3] They have also been adapted into a film (The Hexer), two television series (The Hexer and The Witcher), a trilogy of video games (The Witcher, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt), and a graphic novel series. The video games have been even more successful, with more than 50 million copies sold as of May 2020

Additional Research: amazon – The Schoolmistress and Other Stories (1920) is a collection of short stories by Russian writer Anton Chekhov. The Schoolmistress was written in 1897 and published in an issue of Moscow s daily newspaper Russkiye Vedomosti. Even for Chekhov, whose work is characteristically bleak and noted for its unsparing realism, the title story of this collection is particularly hopeless. And yet, reading it alongside these other stories by a true icon of world and Russian literature, one cannot help but feel a sense of hope, reminded?as Chekhov s readers almost invariably are?of the light one finds in even the darkest of places. The Schoolmistress, which Chekhov wrote in Nice, is a brief story that follows Maria Vasilyevna as she returns to the village where she lives and works after collecting her pay in town. On the way, her cart nearly overturns, and she is forced to get out in the middle of a freezing river. To dry off, she takes a break at a local tavern, where she meets the formerly handsome Khanov, a landlord of her acquaintance. As she continues on her journey, she muses on her lot in life. Beset with memories and regrets, she struggles to make it home to a life she can hardly bear. A Nervous Breakdown, originally published in 1889, is the story of a young law student who reluctantly agrees to accompany his friends on a night in Moscow s red-light district. Overwhelmed with despair and guilt, he struggles to reconcile what he sees with his own idealistic sense of the world. These are only two of the twenty-one works collected in The Schoolmistress and Other Stories, which showcase the immense talents of Anton Chekhov, an icon of Russian literature. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Anton Chekhov s The Schoolmistress and Other Stories is a classic of Russian literature reimagined for modern readers.

Description Original: DO NOT USE AS IS RUN THRU AI The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a gothic story by American author Washington Irving, contained in his collection of 34 essays and short stories titled The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. Written while Irving was living abroad in Birmingham, England, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” was first published in 1819. Along with Irvings companion piece “Rip Van Winkle”, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” is among the earliest examples of American fiction with enduring popularity. This story in particular became very popular as a Halloween tale because of a character known as the Headless Horseman believed to be a Hessian soldier who was decapitated by a cannonball in battle. The “Legend” relates the tale of Ichabod Crane, a lean, lanky, and extremely superstitious schoolmaster from Connecticut. As a firm believer in witchcraft and the like, Crane has an unequaled “appetite for the marvelous,” which is only increased by his stay in “the spell-bound region” of Sleepy Hollow. A source of “fearful pleasure” for Crane is to visit the Old Dutch wives and listen to their “marvelous tales of ghosts and goblins,” haunted locations, and the tales of the Headless Horseman, or the Galloping Hessian of the Hollow, as they sometimes called him.” Throughout the story, Ichabod Crane competes with Abraham “Brom Bones” Van Brunt, the town rowdy, for the hand of 18-year-old Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter and sole child of wealthy farmer Baltus Van Tassel. Ichabod Crane, a Yankee, and an outsider, sees marriage to Katrina as a means of procuring Van Tassels extravagant wealth. The tension among the three continues for some time and is soon brought to a head.

Description Original: DO NOT USE AS IS RUN THRU AI Phileas Fogg was a man of meticulous habits. What passes as a social life is spending time at the exclusive Reform Club where his stodgy colleagues and he passed most of their days. An article in the Daily Telegraph is reporting that with the completion of a new railway section in India, it is now, in theory, possible to travel all the way around the world in as few as 80 days. An argument ensues among the men over the impossibility of such a feat. In a moment of uncharacteristic spontaneity, Fogg makes a substantial wager. He bets half his fortune GB 20,000 that he can indeed complete a journey around the world in 80 days. With his newly hired and somewhat astonished valet, Passepartout, Fogg immediately leaves for Dover. Steamers, trains, and elephants are just a few of his means of travel through dangerous locations and exotic lands. As if the journey itself were not dramatic enough, Detective Fix, a bounty hunter is tracking him the entire way mistakenly believing that he is really pursuing a notorious bank robber. This story has become a classic of modern literature and has been adapted in nearly every creative medium, including film, television, stage, radio, and even video games.

Description Original: DO NOT USE AS IS RUN THRU AI The Communist Manifesto, originally the Manifesto of the Communist Party (German: Manifest der Kommunistischen Partei), is an 1848 pamphlet by German philosophers Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Commissioned by the Communist League and originally published in London just as the Revolutions of 1848 began to erupt, the Manifesto has been recognized as one of the worlds most influential political documents. It presents an analytical approach to the class struggle (historical and then-present) and the conflicts of capitalism and the capitalist mode of production, rather than a prediction of communisms potential future forms. The Communist Manifesto summarizes Marx and Engels theories concerning the nature of society and politics, namely that in their own words “[t]he history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles”. It also briefly features their ideas for how the capitalist society of the time would eventually be replaced by socialism. In the last paragraph of the Manifesto, the authors call for a “forcible overthrow of all existing social conditions”, which served as a call for communist revolutions around the world.

Description Original: DO NOT USE AS IS RUN THRU AI Robinson Crusoe is a novel by Daniel Defoe, first published on 25 April 1719. The first edition credited the works protagonist Robinson Crusoe as its author, leading many readers to believe he was a real person and the book a travelogue of true incidents. Epistolary, confessional, and didactic in form, the book is presented as an autobiography of the title character (whose birth name is Robinson Kreutznaer) a castaway who spends 28 years on a remote tropical desert island near the coasts of Venezuela and Trinidad (roughly resembling Tobago), encountering cannibals, captives, and mutineers, before ultimately being rescued. The story has been thought to be based on the life of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish castaway who lived for four years on a Pacific Island called “M s a Tierra”, now part of Chile, which was renamed Robinson Crusoe Island in 1966. Despite its simple narrative style, Robinson Crusoe was well received in the literary world and is often credited as marking the beginning of realistic fiction as a literary genre. It is generally seen as a contender for the first English novel. Before the end of 1719, the book had already run through four editions, and it has gone on to become one of the most widely published books in history, spawning so many imitations, not only in literature but also in film, television, and radio, that its name is used to define a genre, the Robinsonade.
