Description wiki: Dream of the Red Chamber, also called The Story of the Stone, or Hongloumeng (traditional Chinese: ???; simplified Chinese: ???; pinyin: H ngl um ng), composed by Cao Xueqin, is one of Chinas Four Great Classical Novels. It was written some time in the middle of the 18th century during the Qing dynasty. Long considered a masterpiece of Chinese literature, the novel is generally acknowledged to be one of the pinnacles of Chinese fiction.[1] “Redology” is the field of study devoted exclusively to this work.[2] The title has also been translated as Red Chamber Dream and A Dream of Red Mansions. The novel circulated in manuscript copies with various titles until its print publication, in 1791. Gao E, who prepared the first and second printed editions with his partner Cheng Weiyuan (???) in 1791 92, added 40 additional chapters to complete the novel.[3] Red Chamber is believed to be semi-autobiographical, mirroring the rise and decline of author Cao Xueqins own family and, by extension, of the Qing dynasty.[4] As the author details in the first chapter, it is intended to be a memorial to the women he knew in his youth: friends, relatives and servants. The novel is remarkable not only for its huge cast of characters and psychological scope, but also for its precise and detailed observation of the life and social structures typical of 18th-century Chinese society.[5] It contains within its pages a sampling of all of the major modes of the Chinese literary tradition.[6]
Description Good Reads: Xueqin Cao (Chinese: ???; pinyin: C o Xu?q n; Wade Giles: Tsao Hsueh-chin, 1715 or 1724 1763 or 1764) was a Qing Dynasty Chinese writer, best known as the author of Dream of the Red Chamber, one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. His given name was Zhan Cao (??) and his courtesy name is Mengruan (??; ??; literally “Dream about Ruan” or “Dream of Ruan”)[…]

Description wiki: The Advancement of Learning (full title: Of the Proficience and Advancement of Learning, Divine and Human) is a 1605 book by Francis Bacon. It inspired the taxonomic structure of the highly influential Encyclop die by Jean le Rond dAlembert and Denis Diderot, and is credited by Bacons biographer-essayist Catherine Drinker Bowen with being a pioneering essay in support of empirical philosophy.[1] The following passage from The Advancement of Learning was used as the foreword to a popular Cambridge textbook:[2] So that as Tennis is a game of no use in itself, but of great use in respect it maketh a quick eye, and a body ready to put itself in all positions, so, in the Mathematics the use which is collateral, an intervenient, is no less worthy, than that which is principle and intended.

Description wiki: The Wonder Book of Bible Stories is a 1904 collection by Logan Marshall published in the United States. The book includes biblical stories from both the Old and New Testaments retold for children and illustrated with rich woodcuts and color plates. Reprinted several times in the 1920s, it went out of print in 1925. It was made available online by Project Gutenberg in 2005 and there have subsequently been several print editions in Chinese and in English, published in Taipei, as well as other ebook versions.[1] Other collections of Bible stories with this title have been made by Mary Juergens (1951), David Kyles (1953) and Jesse Lyman Hurlbut (1958).[2]
Description Good Reads: The Bible is one of the two or three oldest books in the world, but unlike most of the ancient books, it is found not only in great libraries, but in almost every home of the civilized world; and it is not only studied by learned scholars, but read by the common people; and its many stories grasp and hold the attention of little children. Happy is that child who has heard, over and over again, the Bible stories until they have become fixed in his mind and memory…

Description wiki: Faust is a tragic play in two parts by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, usually known in English as Faust, Part One and Faust, Part Two. Nearly all of Part One and the majority of Part Two are written in rhymed verse. Although rarely staged in its entirety, it is the play with the largest audience numbers on German-language stages. Faust is considered by many to be Goethes magnum opus and the greatest work of German literature.[1] The earliest forms of the work, known as the Urfaust, were developed between 1772 and 1775; however, the details of that development are not entirely clear. Urfaust has twenty-two scenes, one in prose, two largely prose and the remaining 1,441 lines in rhymed verse. The manuscript is lost, but a copy was discovered in 1886.[2] The first appearance of the work in print was Faust, a Fragment, published in 1790. Goethe completed a preliminary version of what is now known as Part One in 1806. Its publication in 1808 was followed by the revised 1828 29 edition, the last to be edited by Goethe himself. Goethe finished writing Faust, Part Two in 1831; it was published posthumously the following year. In contrast to Faust, Part One, the focus here is no longer on the soul of Faust, which has been sold to the devil, but rather on social phenomena such as psychology, history and politics, in addition to mystical and philosophical topics. The second part formed the principal occupation of Goethes last years.

Description wiki: Selections from the Writings of Kierkegaard is a 1923 book about S ren Kierkegaard by the American scholar Lee M. Hollander. Its publication marked a significant turning-point in American and English language philosophy, as it introduced English translation excerpts of Kierkegaards philosophy to America and other English-speaking countries.
Description Good Reads: S ren Aabye Kierkegaard was a prolific 19th century Danish philosopher and theologian. Kierkegaard strongly criticised both the Hegelianism of his time and what he saw as the empty formalities of the Church of Denmark. Much of his work deals with religious themes such as faith in God, the institution of the Christian Church, Christian ethics and theology, and the emotions and feelings of individuals when faced with life choices. His early work was written under various pseudonyms who present their own distinctive viewpoints in a complex dialogue. Kierkegaard left the task of discovering the meaning of his works to the reader, because “the task must be made difficult, for only the difficult inspires the noble-hearted”.Scholars have interpreted Kierkegaard variously as an existentialist, neo-orthodoxist, postmodernist, humanist, and individualist.

First published in 1903, it contains a series of interrelated lyrical essays about the inhabitants of the American Southwest, both human and otherwise. It is number two on the Zamorano Eighty list of significant early Californiana.
Description Good Reads: Between the high Sierras south from Yosemite east and south over a very great assemblage of broken ranges beyond Death Valley, and on illimitably into the Mojave Desert is the territory that Mary Austin calls the Land of Little Rain. In this classic collection of meditations on the wonders of this region, Austin generously shares such news of the land, of its trails and what is astir in them, as one lover of it can give to another. Her vivid writings capture the landscape from burnt hills to sun-baked mesas as well as the rich variety of plant and animal life, and the few human beings who inhabit the land, including cattlemen, miners, and Paiute Indians. Description Good Reads: When the concept of eugenics — the practice of selecting for desirable traits in the larger population by encouraging gifted and/or attractive people to breed — began to take hold in the early twentieth century, British thinker and writer G.K. Chesterton took a stance contrary to that of many intellectuals of the period and denounced it as evil in this bold, engaging series of essays.

Description Good Reads: 1922. Hall, the American philosopher, in over a period of 20 years of dynamic public activity, has steadfastly sought recognition of the belief that world civilization can only be perfected when human beings meet on a common ground of intelligence, cooperation and worthy purpose. The Initiates of the Flame is a reverent and inspired tribute to the ancient wisdom teachings. Though mystical in spirit, this work explains many keys to esoteric philosophy. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.
Description Penquin: NA
Additional Research: Few realize that even at the present stage of civilization in this world, there are souls who, like the priests of the ancient temples, walk the earth and watch and guard the sacred fires that burn upon the altar of humanity. Purified ones they are, who have renounced the life of this sphere in order to guard and protect the Flame, that spiritual principle in man, now hidden beneath the ruins of his fallen temple. As we think of the nations that are past, of Greece and Rome and the grandeur that was Egypts, we sigh as we recall the story of their fall; and we watch the nations of today, not knowing which will be the next to draw its shroud around itself and join that great ghostly file of peoples that are dead. But everywhere, even in the rise and fall of nations, we see through the haze of materiality, justice; everywhere we see reward, not of man but of the invincible One, the eternal Flame. A great hand reaches out from the unseen and regulates the affairs of man. It reaches out from that great spiritual Flame which nourishes all created things,

Description wiki: Argonauts of the Western Pacific: An Account of Native Enterprise and Adventure in the Archipelagoes of Melanesian New Guinea is a 1922 ethnological work by Bronis?aw Malinowski, which has had enormous impact on the ethnographic genre. The book is about the Trobriand people who live on the small Kiriwana island chain northeast of the island of New Guinea. It is part of Malinowskis trilogy on the Trobrianders, including The Sexual Life of Savages in North-Western Melanesia (1929) and Coral Gardens and Their Magic (1935).
Description Good Reads: The founding document of economic anthropology! Bronislaw Malinowski, one of the all-time great anthropologists of the world, had a talent for bringing together in single comprehension the warm reality of human living with the cool abstractions of science. His pages have become an almost indispensable link between the knowing of exotic and remote people with theoretical knowledge about humankind. This volume–originally published in 1922–can be considered the founding document of economic anthropology, and remains the best one to read. It emphasizes the great significance of primitive economics by singling out the notable exchange system of the Trobriand Islands for special consideration. Although the main theme is economic, constant reference is made in this milestone of anthropological research and interpretation to social organization, life and meaning, the power of magic, and to mythology and folklore.

Description wiki: Beauty and the Beast (French: La Belle et la B te) is a fairy tale written by French novelist Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve and published in 1740 in La Jeune Am ricaine et les contes marins (The Young American and Marine Tales).[1][2] Her lengthy version was abridged, rewritten, and published by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont in 1756 in Magasin des enfants[3] (Childrens Collection) to produce the version most commonly retold[4] and later by Andrew Lang in the Blue Fairy Book of his Fairy Book series in 1889.[5] The fairy tale was influenced by Ancient Greek stories such as “Cupid and Psyche” from The Golden Ass, written by Lucius Apuleius Madaurensis in the 2nd century AD, and The Pig King, an Italian fairytale published by Giovanni Francesco Straparola in The Facetious Nights of Straparola around 1550
Description Good Reads: Beauty and the Beast; tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme… This is the best known version of the original story that inspired Walt Disney s classic and has been retold countless times and adapted for screen, stage, prose, and television.

Description wiki: Addressed to a western audience, it was originally written in English and is one of the great English tea classics. Okakura had been taught at a young age to speak English and was proficient at communicating his thoughts to the Western mind. In his book, he discusses such topics as Zen and Taoism, but also the secular aspects of Tea and Japanese life. The book emphasizes how Teaism taught the Japanese many things; most importantly, simplicity. Kakuz? argues that this tea-induced simplicity affected art and architecture, and he was a long-time student of the visual arts. In the book, Kakuz? states that Teaism, in itself, is one of the profound universal remedies that two parties could sit down to. Kakuz? went on to mention that tea has been the subject of many historical events, such as peace treaties and the like. He ends the book with a chapter on Tea Masters and spends some time talking about Sen no Riky? and his contribution to the Japanese tea ceremony.
Description Good Reads: In 1906 in turn-of-the-century Boston, a small, esoteric book about tea was written with the intention of being read aloud in the famous salon of Isabella Gardner, Bostons most notorious socialite. It was authored by Okakura Kakuzo, a Japanese philosopher, art expert, and curator. Little known at the time, Kakuzo would emerge as one of the great thinkers of the early 20th century, a genius who was insightful, witty and greatly responsible for bridging Western and Eastern cultures. Okakura had been taught at a young age to speak English and was more than capable of expressing to Westerners the nuances of tea and the Japanese Tea Ceremony. In The Book of Tea Classic Edition, he discusses such topics as Zen and Taoism, but also the secular aspects of tea and Japanese life. The book emphasizes how Teaism taught the Japanese many things; most importantly, simplicity. Kakuzo argues that tea-induced simplicity affected the culture, art and architecture of Japan.

Description Good Reads: Set against the backdrop of the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745, Waverley depicts the story of Edward Waverley, an idealistic daydreamer whose loyalty to his regiment is threatened when they are sent to the Scottish Highlands. When he finds himself drawn to the charismatic chieftain Fergus Mac-Ivor and his beautiful sister Flora, their ardent loyalty to Prince Charles Edward Stuart appeals to Waverleys romantic nature and he allies himself with their cause – a move that proves highly dangerous for the young officer. Scotts first novel was a huge success when it was published in 1814 and marked the start of his extraordinary literary success. With its vivid depiction of the wild Highland landscapes and patriotic clansmen, Waverley is a brilliant evocation of the old Scotland – a world Scott believed was swiftly disappearing in the face of a new, modern era.

Description wiki: Wuthering Heights is an 1847 novel by Emily Bront , initially published under the pseudonym Ellis Bell. It concerns two families of the landed gentry living on the West Yorkshire moors, the Earnshaws and the Lintons, and their turbulent relationships with Earnshaws adopted son, Heathcliff. The novel was influenced by Romanticism and Gothic fiction. Wuthering Heights is now considered a classic of English literature, but contemporaneous reviews were polarised. It was controversial for its depictions of mental and physical cruelty, and for its challenges to Victorian morality and religious and societal values.[1][2] Wuthering Heights was accepted by publisher Thomas Newby along with Anne Bront s Agnes Grey before the success of their sister Charlottes novel Jane Eyre, but they were published later. Charlotte edited a second edition of Wuthering Heights after Emilys death which was published in 1850.[3] It has inspired an array of adaptations across several media, including English singer-songwriter Kate Bushs song of the same name.

Description Original: DO NOT USE AS IS RUN THRU AI Wuthering Heights, a novel by Emily Bront , was published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell. The story is recounted by Lockwood, a disinterested party, whose narrative serves as the frame for a series of retrospective shorter narratives by Ellen Dean, a housekeeper. All concern the impact of the foundling Heathcliff on the two families of Earnshaw and Linton in a remote Yorkshire district at the end of the 18th century. Embittered by abuse and by the marriage of Cathy Earnshaw who shares his stormy nature and whom he loves to the gentle and prosperous Edgar Linton, Heathcliff plans a revenge on both families, extending into the second generation.
