Description wiki: Jane Eyre /??r/ (originally published as Jane Eyre: An Autobiography) is a novel by English writer Charlotte Bront , published under the pen name “Currer Bell”, on 16 October 1847, by Smith, Elder & Co. of London. The first American edition was published the following year by Harper & Brothers of New York. Jane Eyre is a Bildungsroman which follows the experiences of its eponymous heroine, including her growth to adulthood and her love for Mr. Rochester, the brooding master of Thornfield Hall. The novel revolutionised prose fiction by being the first to focus on its protagonists moral and spiritual development through an intimate first-person narrative, where actions and events are coloured by a psychological intensity. Charlotte Bront has been called the “first historian of the private consciousness”, and the literary ancestor of writers like Proust and Joyce. The book contains elements of social criticism with a strong sense of Christian morality at its core, and it is considered by many to be ahead of its time because of Janes individualistic character and how the novel approaches the topics of class, sexuality, religion, and feminism. It, along with Jane Austens Pride and Prejudice, is one of the most famous romance novels of all time.

Description Good Reads: The novel Jane Eyre is a first-person narrative of the title character. The novel is set somewhere in the north of England, during the reign of George III (1760 1820), and goes through five distinct stages: Janes childhood at Gateshead Hall, where she is emotionally and physically abused by her aunt and cousins; her education at Lowood School, where she acquires friends and role models but suffers privations and oppression; her time as governess at Thornfield Hall, where she falls in love with her Byronic employer, Edward Rochester; her time with the Rivers family, during which her earnest but cold clergyman cousin, St. John Rivers, proposes to her; and her reunion with, and marriage to, her beloved Rochester. During these sections the novel provides perspectives on a number of important social issues and ideas, many of which are critical of the status quo (see the Themes section below). Literary critic Jerome Beaty opines that the close first person perspective leaves the reader “too uncritically accepting of her worldview”, and often leads reading and conversation about the novel towards supporting Jane, regardless of how irregular her ideas or perspectives are.

Description Penquin: As an orphan, Jane has a childhood full of trouble, but her sense of self and stubborn independence help her to steer through the miseries inflicted by cruel relatives and a brutal school. A position as governess at Thornfield Hall promises a kind of freedom. But Thornfield is a house full of secrets, its master a passionate, tomented man. When she falls in love with her sardonic employer, Jane faces her greatest struggle, in a choice between love and self-respect.

Description Original: DO NOT USE AS IS RUN THRU AI Charlotte Bronte was a trailblazer, and this masterpiece shows us why. Her character Jane Eyre became a new heroine for a new era, defiant, courageous and a complete departure from the meek and powerless female characters of that time period. Orphaned at a young age, Jane is raised by her aunt, a woman, both cruel and heartless. Jane s spirited independence in born during these years which serves her well as she takes on the position of Governess at Thornfield Hall. She begins an ill-advised love affair with her employer Rochester and soon discovers his terrible secret which forces her to choose: Stay with him and deal with the consequences or walk away from the man she loves?

Description wiki: Peter Pan is a fictional character created by Scottish novelist and playwright J. M. Barrie. A free-spirited and mischievous young boy who can fly and never grows up, Peter Pan spends his never-ending childhood having adventures on the mythical island of Neverland as the leader of the Lost Boys, interacting with fairies, pirates, mermaids, Native Americans, and occasionally ordinary children from the world outside Neverland. Peter Pan has become a cultural icon symbolizing youthful innocence and escapism. In addition to two distinct works by Barrie, The Little White Bird (1902, with chapters 13 18 published in Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens in 1906), and the West End stage play Peter Pan; or, the Boy Who Wouldnt Grow Up (1904, which expanded into the 1911 novel Peter and Wendy), the character has been featured in a variety of media and merchandise, both adapting and expanding on Barries works. These include the 1924 silent film, 1953 Disney animated film, a 2003 dramatic/live-action film, a television series and many other works.

Description Good Reads: Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie Peter Pan, the mischievous boy who refuses to grow up, lands in the Darlings proper middle-class home to look for his shadow. He befriends Wendy, John and Michael and teaches them to fly (with a little help from fairy dust). He and Tinker Bell whisk them off to Never-land where they encounter the Red Indians, the Little Lost Boys, pirates and the dastardly Captain Hook

Description Penquin: Originally introduced in 1902 in another Barrie novel, The Little White Bird, Peter s story was expanded as a standalone novel in 1911 and since then has been memorably adapted for the movies, for television, and for the stage. The story s emotional truths about youth, freedom, and responsibility continue to touch the heart and thrill the imagination. Barrie works an indisputable magic on listeners of all ages in this classic tale. Peter grows up in Neverland, along with the Lost Boys and the fairy Tinker Bell, after falling out of his pram. Years later, Peter visits England where he meets Wendy, John and Michael Darling, all of whom accompany Peter to Neverland. There they have many adventures, meeting mermaids and fighting pirates, most notably, Captain Hook. Brought to life by British actress, writer, comedian and presenter, Dawn French, who is best known for starring in and writing for the BBC comedy sketch show French and Saunders with comedy partner Jennifer Saunders and for playing the lead role as Geraldine Granger in the BBC sitcom The Vicar of Dibley.

Description wiki: Pride and Prejudice is an 1813 romantic novel of manners written by Jane Austen. Though it is mostly called a romantic novel, it can also be considered a satirical book. The novel follows the character development of Elizabeth Bennet, the dynamic protagonist of the book who learns about the repercussions of hasty judgments and comes to appreciate the difference between superficial goodness and actual goodness. Mr. Bennet of Longbourn estate has five daughters, but his property is entailed and can only be passed to a male heir. His wife also lacks an inheritance, so his family will be destitute upon his death. Thus, it is imperative that at least one of the girls marry well to support the others, which is a motivation that drives the plot. The novel revolves around the importance of marrying for love rather than money or social prestige, despite the communal pressure to make a wealthy match. Pride and Prejudice has consistently appeared near the top of lists of “most-loved books” among literary scholars and the reading public. It has become one of the most popular novels in English literature, with over 20 million copies sold, and has inspired many derivatives in modern literature.[1][2] For more than a century, dramatic adaptations, reprints, unofficial sequels, films, and TV versions of Pride and Prejudice have portrayed the memorable characters and themes of the novel, reaching mass audiences.[3]

Description Good Reads: Since its immediate success in 1813, Pride and Prejudice has remained one of the most popular novels in the English language. Jane Austen called this brilliant work “her own darling child” and its vivacious heroine, Elizabeth Bennet, “as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print.” The romantic clash between the opinionated Elizabeth and her proud beau, Mr. Darcy, is a splendid performance of civilized sparring. And Jane Austens radiant wit sparkles as her characters dance a delicate quadrille of flirtation and intrigue, making this book the most superb comedy of manners of Regency England

Description wiki: The Great Gatsby is a 1925 novel by American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald. Set in the Jazz Age on Long Island, near New York City, the novel depicts first-person narrator Nick Carraways interactions with mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and Gatsbys obsession to reunite with his former lover, Daisy Buchanan. The novel was inspired by a youthful romance Fitzgerald had with socialite Ginevra King, and the riotous parties he attended on Long Islands North Shore in 1922. Following a move to the French Riviera, Fitzgerald completed a rough draft of the novel in 1924. He submitted it to editor Maxwell Perkins, who persuaded Fitzgerald to revise the work over the following winter. After making revisions, Fitzgerald was satisfied with the text, but remained ambivalent about the books title and considered several alternatives. Painter Francis Cugats cover art greatly impressed Fitzgerald, and he incorporated aspects of it into the novel. After its publication by Scribners in April 1925, The Great Gatsby received generally favorable reviews, though some literary critics believed it did not equal Fitzgeralds previous efforts. Compared to his earlier novels, Gatsby was a commercial disappointment, selling fewer than 20,000 copies by October, and Fitzgeralds hopes of a monetary windfall from the novel were unrealized. When the author died in 1940, he believed himself to be a failure and his work forgotten. During World War II, the novel experienced an abrupt surge in popularity when the Council on Books in Wartime distributed free copies to American soldiers serving overseas. This new-found popularity launched a critical and scholarly re-examination, and the work soon became a core part of most American high school curricula and a part of American popular culture. Numerous stage and film adaptations followed in the subsequent decades.

The drama ensues as Dr. Jeckyll desperately tries to control the monster, Mr. Hyde, that lives inside of him. Description wiki: A Christmas Carol. In Prose. Being a Ghost Story of Christmas, commonly known as A Christmas Carol, is a novella by Charles Dickens, first published in London by Chapman & Hall in 1843 and illustrated by John Leech. A Christmas Carol recounts the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, an elderly miser who is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. After their visits, Scrooge is transformed into a kinder, gentler man. Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol during a period when the British were exploring and re-evaluating past Christmas traditions, including carols, and newer customs such as Christmas trees. He was influenced by the experiences of his own youth and by the Christmas stories of other authors, including Washington Irving and Douglas Jerrold. Dickens had written three Christmas stories prior to the novella, and was inspired following a visit to the Field Lane Ragged School, one of several establishments for Londons street children. The treatment of the poor and the ability of a selfish man to redeem himself by transforming into a more sympathetic character are the key themes of the story. There is discussion among academics as to whether this is a fully secular story, or if it is a Christian allegory. Published on 19 December, the first edition sold out by Christmas Eve; by the end of 1844 thirteen editions had been released. Most critics reviewed the novella favourably. The story was illicitly copied in January 1844; Dickens took legal action against the publishers, who went bankrupt, further reducing Dickenss small profits from the publication. He went on to write four other Christmas stories in subsequent years. In 1849 he began public readings of the story, which proved so successful he undertook 127 further performances until 1870, the year of his death. A Christmas Carol has never been out of print and has been translated into several languages; the story has been adapted many times for film, stage, opera and other media. A Christmas Carol captured the zeitgeist of the mid-Victorian revival of the Christmas holiday. Dickens had acknowledged the influence of the modern Western observance of Christmas and later inspired several aspects of Christmas, including family gatherings, seasonal food and drink, dancing, games and a festive generosity of spirit.

Description Good Reads: A Christmas Carol is a novell by English author Charles Dickens. The story tells of bitter and miserly Ebenezer Scrooge s ideological, ethical, and emotional transformation resulting from supernatural visits from Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. The novell met with instant success and critical acclaim.

Description wiki: “The Devil in Iron” is one of the original stories by Robert E. Howard about Conan the Cimmerian, first published in Weird Tales in August 1934. Howard earned $115 for the publication of this story.[1] The plot concerns the resurrection of a mythical demon, the theft of a sacred dagger, and an unrelated trap that lures Conan to the island fortress roamed by the demon. The storys plot loopholes and borrowed elements from “Iron Shadows in the Moon” lead some Howard scholars to call this story the weakest of the early Conan tales.

Description Good Reads: Premium-sized adventure short featuring Conan. While one could say a lot against some of the sexist fantasies in Conan stories, Howards stories always are crisp and satisfying through their completeness. Dont miss yet another from the master of adventure pulp!

Description wiki: “Shadows in Zamboula” is one of the original stories by Robert E. Howard about Conan the Cimmerian, first published in Weird Tales in November 1935. Its original title was “The Man-Eaters of Zamboula”. The story takes place over the course of a night in the desert city of Zamboula, with political intrigue amidst streets filled with roaming cannibals. This story also introduced a fearsome strangler named Baal-Pteor, who is one of the few humans in the Conan stories to be a physical challenge for the main character himself. By present-day sensibilities, the story is seriously marred by including a vicious racial stereotype – blacks as cannibals – though Howard strove to lessen this by making it clear that the cannibals in Zamboula are only the specific blacks from Darfar, other blacks being untainted. A white character, Aram Baksh, proves to be a more sinister antagonist by facilitating, exploiting, and profiting from the cannibalism of the Dafari slaves.

Description Good Reads: Robert Ervin Howard (1906-1936) was an American pulp writer of fantasy, horror, historical adventure, boxing, western, and detective fiction. He is well known for having created the character Conan the Cimmerian, a literary icon whose pop-culture imprint can be compared to such icons as Tarzan of the Apes, Sherlock Holmes, and James Bond. Voracious reading, along with a natural talent for prose writing and the encouragement of teachers, conspired to create in Howard an interest in becoming a professional writer. One by one he discovered the authors that would influence his later work: Jack London and Rudyard Kipling. Its clear from Howards earliest writings and the recollections of his friends that he suffered from severe depression from an early age. Friends recall him defending the act of suicide as a valid alternative as early as eighteen years old, while many of his stories and poems have a suicidal gloom and intensity that seem prescient in hindsight, describing such an end not as a tragedy but as a release from hell on earth.

Howard first published in the November, 1935, issue Weird Tales. The story was republished in the collections Conan the Barbarian (Gnome Press, 1954) and Conan the Wanderer (Lancer Books, 1968). It has more recently been published in the collections The Conan Chronicles Volume 1: The People of the Black Circle (Gollancz, 2000) as “Shadows in Zamboula” and in Conan of Cimmeria: Volume Three (1935-1936) (Del Rey, 2005) under its original title.

Description wiki: A Voyage to Arcturus is a novel by the Scottish writer David Lindsay, first published in 1920. It combines fantasy, philosophy, and science fiction in an exploration of the nature of good and evil and their relationship with existence. Described by critic, novelist, and philosopher Colin Wilson as the “greatest novel of the twentieth century”,[1] it was a central influence on C. S. Lewis Space Trilogy,[2] and through him on J. R. R. Tolkien, who said he read the book “with avidity”.[3] Clive Barker called it “a masterpiece” and “an extraordinary work … quite magnificent.”[4] An interstellar voyage is the framework for a narrative of a journey through fantastic landscapes. The story is set at Tormance, an imaginary planet orbiting Arcturus, which in the novel (but not in reality) is a double star system, consisting of stars Branchspell and Alppain. The lands through which the characters travel represent philosophical systems or states of mind, through which the main character, Maskull, passes on his search for the meaning of life.

Description wiki: Triplanetary was designed by Marc W. Miller and John Harshman, loosely based on novels and short stories from the Golden Age of Science Fiction, particularly the Future History works of Robert Heinlein.[1] Triplanetary was originally conceived as the first part of a proposed series of games that was to be named “The Stars! The Stars!”[2]:?53? As Miller related, a late-night session of Lensman with Harshman using blank hex-grid battle board combat “inspired the design for Triplanetary, with its image of our solar system and use of vector movement”.[3] In 1976, GDW released Triplanetary Variant V/2, an expansion of the suggested “Prospecting” scenario that was part of the original Errata sheets.[1]

Description Good Reads: About the Story: A LITTLE JOURNEY (August 1951) marks Bradbury s final contribution to the editorial decade of Horace Gold, the editor of GALAXY magazine. Like THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES and THE FIREMAN, the story demonstrates Bradbury s characteristic blending so early in his career of the sentimental and the transcendent, the homely and the mystical. Bradbury s old women in space and their strange outcome are reminiscent of his more famous story KALEIDOSCOPE (published in THE ILLUSTRATED MAN) and its conclusion shows unusual if understated power. Bradbury s THE FIREMAN (the short-form version of FAHRENHEIT 451 which was doubled in length for its book publication in 1953) appeared in the February 1951 issue of GALAXY and further solidified GALAXY s reputation, as a magazine of unprecedented originality and ambition. Gold s commitment to the highly ambitious THE FIREMAN was, then, courageous for its time and gave publicity to the editor s insistence that GALAXY was an entirely new kind of science fiction magazine, one which was far more oriented toward style and controversial social extrapolation than the other markets ever had been. Although THE FIREMAN and THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES had been published earlier to significant attention, Bradbury in 1951 was by no means a writer of substantial reputation and his work was regarded by most science fiction editors and readers as marginal to the genre. About the Author: Ray Douglas Bradbury (b. 1920) entered science fiction as a teenage Los Angeles fan frantic to sell John W. Campbell and become a major science fiction writer; although he eventually sold Campbell two very short stories in the early 40s, his career took a different direction, first through the second- and third-level science fiction magazines (PLANET, STARTLING STORIES) and then to the literary quarterlies and women s magazines (HARPER S BAZAAR, CHARM) where his distinctive stylistic elegance led him to the Best American Short Stories and O. Henry Prize anthologies. He was regarded with the somewhat similar lyrical short story writer Truman Capote as among the most promising of the emerging generation. With THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES he became famous both inside and outside science fiction; subsequent collections (THE ILLUSTRATED MAN, DANDELION WINE) advanced his reputation. He wrote the screenplay for John Huston s film adaptation of MOBY DICK (1953), and in the decades to follow hundreds of short stories and novels (A MEDICINE FOR MELANCHOLY), which cemented his reputation. He was awarded a Medal in Literature by George W. Bush in 2004. About The Galaxy Project: Horace Gold led GALAXY magazine from its first issue dated October 1950 to science fiction s most admired, widely circulated and influential magazine throughout its initial decade. Its legendary importance came from publication of full length novels, novellas and novelettes. GALAXY published nearly every giant in the science fiction field.

Description Good Reads: A FINAL EXAMINATION The basic premise of A Final Examination is that as I approach the later stages of fifty years of a life in medicine I have borne witness over the last generation to what would appear to be the gradual decline of family medicine to the point of imminent dissolution. I am well aware that this reality does weigh heavily on my heart and soul as a physician and for that matter throughout my being. I composed a memoir as what seemed to me the most accurate way to dramatize the nature of this loss – beginning with looking at the genesis of my life in medicine, i.e. where doctors come from, and an extensive and personal look at the context and content of a doctors life, leading to the magic that can occur between doctor and patient. I am a private person. I have always valued the anonymity with which I have been able to live to work and work to live. I want for nothing that I do not already have, certainly not any form of public visibility or recognition. But what other form of revelation can substantiate my plea for concern about medicines future than one based on open and honest self-revelation, one in which many of my patients also generously have joined in? Who might want to read this book? If you have never had the need for the intimate and trusting support of a competent physician, you will be fortunate to reach your lifes conclusion and be able to continue to say the same, as we all will become older, we all make errors of judgment, we all suffer misuses and abuses, we all meet with disease in some form – thus it is to be human – all of us, every manner of doctor included, eventually need a doctor. And this makes the possible disappearance of the traditional dynamic between doctor and patient in all of its manifestations relevant to us all. When you need to make your call, you will not want the medical profession to be as hollow and empty, as antiquated and obsolete as a telephone booth with a dangling defunct phone. At least the telephone booth was replaced with a new and better technology. Does anyone else out there think that our era is so rife with challenge and despair that it is no longer within the power of individuals and committed groups to envision and work toward positive change? The best of our forebearers, many of whom I reference in A Final Examination rejected that thought entirely. It would be my preference to do the same.

Does anyone else out there think that our era is so rife with challenge and despair that it is no longer within the power of individuals and committed groups to envision and work toward positive change? The best of our forebearers, many of whom I reference in A Final Examination rejected that thought entirely. It would be my preference to do the same.
