The Island of Doctor Moreau is a science fiction novel by English author H. G. Wells. The text of the novel is the narration of Edward Prendick who is shipwrecked on an island in the South Pacific. on the island home of Doctor Moreau, a prominent physiologist who hailed from London but had to flee England fled when the gruesome and immoral experiments in vivisecting humans and beasts were exposed publicly.

The novel deals with a number of philosophical themes, including pain and cruelty, moral responsibility, identity, and human interference with nature. While partially intended as a commentary on Darwin s theory of evolution it became an unwittingly prescient commentary on modern times and the dangers of genetic engineering.

As Wells himself wrote: "The Island of Dr. Moreau is an exercise in youthful blasphemy. Now & then, tho I rarely admit it, the universe projects itself towards me in a hideous grimace. It grimaced that time, & I did my best to express my vision of the aimless torture in creation."
