Description wiki: is a collection of ten short stories by P. G. Wodehouse. It was first published in the United Kingdom on 9 October 1925 by Herbert Jenkins, London, and in the United States on 7 October 1927 by George H. Doran, New York.[1] Many of the stories had previously appeared in the Saturday Evening Post, and some were rewritten versions of stories in the collection My Man Jeeves (1919). The book is considered part of the Jeeves canon. The first story in the book, “Jeeves Takes Charge”, describes Jeeves arrival in his masters life, as a replacement for Woosters previous, thieving valet, and features Lady Florence Craye, as well as a passing mention of Lord Emsworth and Blandings Castle. Several of the other stories are set in New York, and the book includes appearances by regular characters Bingo Little, Aunt Dahlia, Anatole, and Sir Roderick Glossop.

Description Good Reads: The titles of the first story in this collection Jeeves Takes Charge and the last Bertie Changes His Mind sum up the relationship of twentieth-century fictions most famous comic characters. In between them, the various feeble-minded men and lively young women who populate Woosters world appeal to Jeeves to solve their problems and are never disappointed.

Additional Research: AMAZON) A Gentleman of Leisure is a comic novel dedicated to Douglas Fairbanks–who starred in the film version; in Hot Water, J. Wellington Gedge is the man who has everything–but finds himself caught in a series of international events. Summer Moonshine involves a complicated love quadrangle and what is probably the ugliest home in England; and Carry On, Jeeves is a collection of stories in which Jeeves the charge and a familiar bevy of individuals appeal to him to solve their problems

Description wiki: is a novel by P. G. Wodehouse, the second full-length novel featuring the popular characters Jeeves and Bertie Wooster, after Thank You, Jeeves. It was first published in the United Kingdom on 5 October 1934 by Herbert Jenkins, London, and in the United States on 15 October 1934 by Little, Brown and Company, Boston, under the title Brinkley Manor.[1] It had also been sold to the Saturday Evening Post, in which it appeared in serial form from 23 December 1933 to 27 January 1934, and in England in the Grand Magazine from April to September 1934.[2] Wodehouse had already started planning this sequel while working on Thank You, Jeeves.[3] The story is mostly set at Brinkley Court, the home of Berties Aunt Dahlia, and introduces the recurring characters Gussie Fink-Nottle and Madeline Bassett. Berties friend Tuppy Glossop and cousin Angela Travers also feature in the novel, as does Brinkley Courts prized chef, Anatole.

Description Good Reads: Gussie Fink-Nottle has locked himself away in the country studying newts ever since he came into his estate. So it is a surprise when Bertie hears that Gussie is not only in London, but he is there to woo Madeline Bassett! At odds with Jeeves over the decorum of a white jacket, Bertie decides to take on Gussies problem himself. Off to Brinkley Court, Bertie must deal with the prize-giving at Market Snodsbury Grammar School, the broken engagement of his cousin Angela, and the resignation of Anatole, his aunts genius chef. Will Jeeves be able to sort out the mess?

Additional Research: AMAZON) Fans devoted to the master of comic fiction P. G. Wodehouse are legion. He represents an antic high point in the world of farce and social satire. Best known for the creation of two fictional worlds based on Blandings Castle and the Wooster-Jeeves gentleman-valet duo, Wodehouse is appreciated the world over for his exceedingly clever and comically savvy send-ups of the idle rich in Edwardian England. The series begins with two Wooster-Jeeves novels and one Blandings Castle novel. In The Code of the Woosters, it takes all the ingenuity of Jeeves, the gentlemans gentleman extraordinaire, to rescue his hapless and hopelessly obtuse young employer, Bertie Wooster, from the pickle of a plot to steal a silver jug from the home of an irascible magistrate. In Right Ho, Jeeves Berties old friend Gussie Fink-Nottle has fallen in love and, as usual, makes a hash of the affair until Jeeves comes to his rescue. Pigs Have Wings takes us to Blandings Castle, where a romantic comedy unfolds alongside the intrigue of the Fat Pig competition in Shropshire. With each volume edited and reset and printed on Scottish cream-wove, acid-free paper, sewn and bound in cloth, these novels are elegant additions to any Wodehouse fans library.

Description wiki: is a comic novel by English author P. G. Wodehouse, first published in the United Kingdom on 30 November 1923 by Herbert Jenkins, London, England and in the United States on 14 March 1924 by George H. Doran, New York.[1] It had previously been serialised, in the Saturday Evening Post in the US between 3 February and 24 March 1923, and in the Grand Magazine in the UK between April and December that year; the ending of this magazine version was rewritten for the book form. It was the fourth and final novel featuring Psmith, the others being Mike (1909) (later republished in two parts, with Psmith appearing in the second, Mike and Psmith (1953)), Psmith in the City (1910), and Psmith, Journalist (1915) in his introduction to the omnibus The World of Psmith, Wodehouse said that he had stopped writing about the character because he couldnt think of any more stories. It was also the second novel set at Blandings Castle, the first being Something Fresh (1915). The Blandings saga would be continued in many more novels and shorts. The book is dedicated to his step-daughter Leonora Wodehouse, referred to as “Queen of her species”

Description Good Reads: Ronald Psmith ( the p is silent, as in pshrimp ) is always willing to help a damsel in distress. So when he sees Eve Halliday without an umbrella during a downpour, he nobly offers her an umbrella, even though it s one he picks out of the Drone Club s umbrella rack. Psmith is so besotted with Eve that, when Lord Emsworth, her new boss, mistakes him for Ralston McTodd, a poet, Psmith pretends to be him so he can make his way to Blandings Castle and woo her. And so the farce begins: criminals disguised as poets with a plan to steal a priceless diamond necklace, a secretary who throws flower pots through windows, and a nighttime heist that ends in gunplay. How will everything be sorted out? Leave it to Psmith

Description wiki: is a collection of ten short stories by P. G. Wodehouse, all with a golfing theme. It was first published in the United Kingdom on 3 February 1922 by Herbert Jenkins Ltd of London. It was later published in the United States by George H. Doran of New York on 28 May 1924 under the title Golf Without Tears.[1] The short stories were originally published in magazines between 1919 and 1922. There are some slight differences between the two editions, chiefly as regards the names of characters, places, and famous golfers, which were adapted to suit the country of publication. The first story in the collection introduces the Oldest Member, a repeat Wodehouse character, who narrates all but the last story.

Description Good Reads: Who but P.G. Wodehouse could have extracted high comedy from the most noble and ancient game of golf? And who else could have combined this comedy with a real appreciation of the game, drawn from personal experience? Wodehouses brilliant but human brand of humor is perfectly suited to these stories of love, rivalry, revenge, and fulfillment on the links. While the Oldest Member sits inside the clubhouse quoting Marcus Aurelius on patience and wisdom, outside on the green the strongest human passions burn. All human life is here, from Sandy McHoots, the cocky professional, to shy Ramsden Waters, whose only consolation is golf. Even golf-haters will not be able to resists stories which perfectly combine physical farce and verbal with a gallery of unforgettable characters.

It was first serialized in parts in the American journal The Little Review from March 1918 to December 1920 and then published in its entirety in Paris by Sylvia Beach on 2 February 1922, Joyces 40th birthday. It is considered one of the most important works of modernist literature[1] and has been called “a demonstration and summation of the entire movement.”[2] According to Declan Kiberd, “Before Joyce, no writer of fiction had so foregrounded the process of thinking”.[3] Ulysses chronicles the appointments and encounters of the itinerant Leopold Bloom in Dublin in the course of an ordinary day, 16 June 1904.[4][5] Ulysses is the Latinised name of Odysseus, the hero of Homers epic poem the Odyssey, and the novel establishes a series of parallels between the poem and the novel, with structural correspondences between the characters and experiences of Bloom and Odysseus, Molly Bloom and Penelope, and Stephen Dedalus and Telemachus, in addition to events and themes of the early 20th-century context of modernism, Dublin, and Irelands relationship to Britain. The novel is highly allusive and also imitates the styles of different periods of English literature. Since its publication, the book has attracted controversy and scrutiny, ranging from an obscenity trial in the United States in 1921 to protracted textual “Joyce Wars”. The novels stream of consciousness technique, careful structuring, and experimental prose replete with puns, parodies, and allusions as well as its rich characterisation and broad humour have led it to be regarded as one of the greatest literary works in history; Joyce fans worldwide now celebrate 16 June as Bloomsday.

Description Good Reads: Loosely based on the Odyssey, this landmark of modern literature follows ordinary Dubliners in 1904. Capturing a single day in the life of Dubliner Leopold Bloom, his friends Buck Mulligan and Stephen Dedalus, his wife Molly, and a scintillating cast of supporting characters, Joyce pushes Celtic lyricism and vulgarity to splendid extremes. Captivating experimental techniques range from interior monologues to exuberant wordplay and earthy humor. A major achievement in 20th century literature

Description Original: Ulysses is a modernist novel by Irish writer James Joyce. In its 1922 review of the novel, the NY Times review state, Ulysses is the most important contribution that has been made to fictional literature in the twentieth century. The review went on to challenge the public but stating, Not 10 men or women out of 100 can read Ulysses. Take up this challenge, as this book will change the way you look at writing, the world and possibly yourself. Ulysses follows Dubliners Leopold Bloom through the course of an ordinary day, 16 June 1904. Ulysses is the Latinized name of Odysseus, the hero of Homers epic poem the Odyssey, and the novel establishes a series of parallels and structural correspondences between the characters: Leopold Bloom and Odysseus, Molly Bloom and Penelope, and Stephen Dedalus and Telemachus. This novel has been called a major achievement in 20th Century literature for the puns, parodies and allusions Joyce uses alongside lyricism and vulgarity. The book became so popular that Joyce fans worldwide now celebrate 16 June as Bloomsday.

Description wiki: The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha (Modern Spanish: El ingenioso hidalgo (in Part 2, caballero) don Quijote de la Mancha, pronounced [el i?xe?njoso i? al?o o? ki?xote e la ?mant?a] (About this soundlisten)), or just Don Quixote (/?d?n ki??ho?ti/, US: /-te?/;[1] Spanish: [do? ki?xote] (About this soundlisten), Early Modern Spanish: [do? ki??ote]), is a Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes. It was originally published in two parts, in 1605 and 1615. A founding work of Western literature, it is often labeled as the first modern novel[2][3] and is considered one of the greatest works ever written.[4][5] Don Quixote also holds the distinction of being one of the most-translated books in the world.[6] The plot revolves around the adventures of a noble (hidalgo) from La Mancha named Alonso Quixano, who reads so many chivalric romances that he loses his mind and decides to become a knight-errant (caballero andante) to revive chivalry and serve his nation, under the name Don Quixote de la Mancha. He recruits a simple farmer, Sancho Panza, as his squire, who often employs a unique, earthy wit in dealing with Don Quixotes rhetorical monologues on knighthood, already considered old-fashioned at the time. Don Quixote, in the first part of the book, does not see the world for what it is and prefers to imagine that he is living out a knightly story. The book had a major influence on the literary community, as evidenced by direct references in Alexandre Dumas The Three Musketeers (1844), Mark Twains Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), and Edmond Rostands Cyrano de Bergerac (1897), as well as the word quixotic and the epithet Lothario; the latter refers to a character in “El curioso impertinente” (“The Impertinently Curious Man”), an intercalated story that appears in Part One, chapters 33 35.[citation needed] When first published, Don Quixote was usually interpreted as a comic novel. After the French Revolution, it was better known for its central ethic that individuals can be right while society is quite wrong and seen as disenchanting. In the 19th century, it was seen as a social commentary, but no one could easily tell “whose side Cervantes was on”. Many critics came to view the work as a tragedy in which Don Quixotes idealism and nobility are viewed by the post-chivalric world as insane, and are defeated and rendered useless by common reality. By the 20th century, the novel had come to occupy a canonical space as one of the foundations of modern literature.

Description Good Reads: Don Quixote has become so entranced by reading chivalric romances that he determines to become a knight-errant himself. In the company of his faithful squire, Sancho Panza, his exploits blossom in all sorts of wonderful ways. While Quixotes fancy often leads him astray he tilts at windmills, imagining them to be giants Sancho acquires cunning and a certain sagacity. Sane madman and wise fool, they roam the world together, and together they have haunted readers imaginations for nearly four hundred years. With its experimental form and literary playfulness, Don Quixote has been generally recognized as the first modern novel. The book has been enormously influential on a host of writers, from Fielding and Sterne to Flaubert, Dickens, Melville, and Faulkner, who reread it once a year, “just as some people read the Bible.”

Description Penquin: Don Quixote has become so entranced reading tales of chivalry that he decides to turn knight errant himself. Sane madman and wise fool, they roam the world together-and together they have haunted readers imaginations for nearly four hundred years. With its experimental form and literary playfulness, Don Quixote has been generally recognized as the first modern novel. This Penguin Classics edition includes John Rutherford s masterly translation, which does full justice to the energy and wit of Cervantes s prose.
