Description Good Reads: New Arabian Nights by Robert Louis Stevenson, first published in 1882, is a collection of short stories previously published in magazines between 1877 and 1880. The collection contains Stevensons first published fiction, and a few of the stories are considered by some critics to be his best work, as well as pioneering works in the English short story tradition. The title is an allusion to the collection of tales known as the One Thousand and One Nights, which Stevenson had read and liked. Although Stevensons stories were set in modern Europe, he was stylistically drawing a connection to the nested structure of the Arabian tales. New Arabian Nights is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 – The first volume contains seven stories originally called Later-day Arabian Nights and published by London Magazine in serial format from June to October 1878. It is composed of two story groups, or cycles: The Suicide Club The Rajahs Diamond Volume 2 – The second volume is a collection of four unconnected (standalone) stories that were previously published in magazines: The Pavilion on the Links (1880), told in 9 mini-chapters A Lodging for the Night (1877) The Sire De Mal troits Door (1877) “Providence and the Guitar (1878)

Description Good Reads: On the 28th of July 1888 the moon was an hour down by four in the morning. In the east a radiating center of brightness told of the day; and beneath, on the skyline, the morning bank was already building, black as ink. We have all read of the swiftness of the days coming and departure in low latitudes; it is a point on which the scientific and sentimental tourist are at one, and has inspired some tasteful poetry. The period certainly varies with the season; but here is one case exactly noted. Although the dawn was thus preparing by four, the sun was not up till six; and it was half-past five before we could distinguish our expected islands from the clouds on the horizon. Eight degrees south, and the day two hours a-coming. The interval was passed on deck in the silence of expectation, the customary thrill of landfall heightened by the strangeness of the shores that we were then approaching. Slowly they took shape in the attenuating darkness. Ua-huna, piling up to a truncated summit, appeared the first upon the starboard bow; almost abeam arose our destination, Nuka-hiva, whelmed in cloud; and betwixt and to the southward, the first rays of the sun displayed the needles of Ua-pu. These pricked about the line of the horizon; like the pinnacles of some ornate and monstrous church, they stood there, in the sparkling brightness of the morning, the fit signboard of a world of wonders.

Description Good Reads: For sheer storytelling delight and pure adventure, Treasure Island has never been surpassed. From the moment young Jim Hawkins first encounters the sinister Blind Pew at the Admiral Benbow Inn until the climactic battle for treasure on a tropic isle, the novel creates scenes and characters that have fired the imaginations of generations of readers. Written by a superb prose stylist, a master of both action and atmosphere, the story centers upon the conflict between good and evil – but in this case a particularly engaging form of evil. It is the villainy of that most ambiguous rogue Long John Silver that sets the tempo of this tale of treachery, greed, and daring. Designed to forever kindle a dream of high romance and distant horizons, Treasure Island is, in the words of G. K. Chesterton, the realization of an ideal, that which is promised in its provocative and beckoning map; a vision not only of white skeletons but also green palm trees and sapphire seas. G. S. Fraser terms it an utterly original book and goes on to write: There will always be a place for stories like Treasure Island that can keep boys and old men happy

Description Good Reads: Stevenson s brooding historical romance demonstrates his most abiding theme the elemental struggle between good and evil as it unfolds against a hauntingly beautiful Scottish landscape, amid the fierce loyalties and violent enmities that characterized Scottish history. When two brothers attempt to split their loyalties between the warring factions of the 1745 Jacobite rising, one family finds itself tragically divided. Stevenson s remarkably vivid characterizations create an acutely moving, psychologically complex work; as Andrea Barrett points out in her Introduction, The brothers characters, not the historical facts, shape the drama.

Description wiki: is a black comedy novel co-written by Robert Louis Stevenson and Lloyd Osbourne, first published in 1889. The story is about two brothers who are the last two surviving members of a tontine. The book was the first of three novels that Stevenson co-wrote with Osbourne, who was his stepson. The others were The Wrecker (1892) and The Ebb-Tide (1894). Osbourne wrote the first draft of the novel late in 1887 (then called The Finsbury Tontine), Stevenson revised it in 1888 (then called A Game of Bluff) and again in 1889 when it was finally called The Wrong Box. A film adaptation, also titled The Wrong Box, was released in 1966, and a musical in 2002.

Description Good Reads: A black comic novel about the last remaining survivors of a tontine – a group life-insurance policy in which the last surviving member stands to receive a fortune. It is a farcical, eccentric and brilliantly written piece of work.

    Description Penquin: N/A

Additional Research: AMAZON) Elderly Joseph and Masterman Finsbury are the last survivors of a tontine established in their youth. Their nephews, Morris and John, have one simple goal: Keep Uncle Joseph alive longer than Uncle Masterman. If they succeed, the brothers will be set for life. If they fail, the fortune goes to cousin Michael and poverty will be their fate. When the siblings regain consciousness after a train wreck, they discover that Joseph or a man dressed exactly like him died in the crash. Not to worry; Morris has a plan. Instead of burying the body where anyone might dig it up, they ll ship it around the world until Uncle Masterman dies. It seems foolproof, until the incorrect package arrives at the first destination and Morris and John have to find poor, dead Uncle Joseph before somebody opens the wrong box. Description wiki: Moonfleet is an 1898 novel written by English writer J. Meade Falkner. The plot is an adventure tale of smuggling, treasure, and shipwreck set in 18th-century England

Description Good Reads: “Moonfleet” (1898) begins as a mystery and an adventure story, a tale of smuggling set among the cliffs, caves, and downs of Dorset. What will be the outcome of the conflict between smugglers and revenue men? How can the hero, John Trenchard, discover the secret of Colonel John Mohunes treasure? As the book progresses these two interwoven themes resolve themselves into a third and richer one, with the friendship and suffering of both John Trenchard and the craggy, taciturn Elzevir Block. Falkners feeling for history and for the landscape of his Dorset setting combine with his gift for storytelling to turn Moonfleet into a historical romance of moving intensity.

Description wiki: is a historical novel by Sir Walter Scott, published in 1819, one of the Waverley novels. The novel is set in the Lammermuir Hills of south-east Scotland, shortly before the Act of Union of 1707 (in the first edition), or shortly after the Act (in the Magnum edition of 1830). It tells of a tragic love affair between young Lucy Ashton and her familys enemy Edgar Ravenswood. Scott indicated the plot was based on an actual incident. The Bride of Lammermoor and A Legend of Montrose were published together anonymously as the third of Scotts Tales of My Landlord series. The story is the basis for Donizettis 1835 opera Lucia di Lammermoor.

Description Good Reads: This is a story of national change and personal tragedy. For Lucy Ashton and Edgar Ravenswood, acts of heroism are thwarted and love is doomed by social, political and historical division. This edition restores the action to the years of uncertainty and political flux before the Union of Scotland and England in 1707, rather than after, as Scotts later revision had placed it.

Description wiki: The Spy: a Tale of the Neutral Ground is a novel by American writer James Fenimore Cooper. His second novel, it was published in 1821 by Wiley & Halsted. The plot is set during the American Revolution and was inspired in part by the family friend John Jay.[1] The Spy was successful and began Coopers reputation as a popular and important American writer.

Description Good Reads: Harry Birsch is thought to be a loyalist living in the American colonies, but when George Washington offers him money in exchange for sensitive information about the British, Harry scoffs at the idea. He exchanges the information not for the monetary gains, but what he can do for America. And so he begins a journey in which he spies for the Americans in an attempt to win the war. In doing so, he must masquerade as a traitor. The real truth is the secret that can never be revealed lest the reputation of all he holds dear will fall. James Fenimore Cooper is best known for his “leather stocking” novels concerning American Indian life and the frontier. His most famous novel is Last of the Mohicans. The Spy is the first novel with espionage as the main theme and is the novel that garnered him much fame.

Description Penquin: A historical adventure reminiscent of Sir Walter Scott s Waverley romances, Cooper s novel centers on Harvey Birch, a common man wrongly suspected of being a spy for the British.

Additional Research: GR review: Written around 1820, this is one of James Fenimore Coopers lesser known novels. Modern spy novels focus on the gadgets and cleverness of the spy trade. This one highlights the individual, and what it meant to be a spy in the Revolutionary War. Harvey Birch led a lonely and dangerous life, hunted by soldiers from both sides, as he worked more or less directly for George Washington. Anonymity was crucial and he ultimately refused pay, choosing to serve his country selflessly. Other humorous characters include a pompous surgeon who glories in amputations and a black servant, whom Copper gives voice to in the slang of the day. Upon finishing the tale, I felt a little prouder to be an American.

Description wiki: Ivanhoe: A Romance (/?a?v?n?ho?/) by Walter Scott is a historical novel published in three volumes, in 1819, as one of the Waverley novels. At the time it was written, the novel represented a shift by Scott away from writing novels set in Scotland in the fairly recent past to England in the Middle Ages. Ivanhoe proved to be one of the best-known and most influential of Scotts novels. Set in 12th-century England, with colourful descriptions of a tournament, outlaws, a witch trial, and divisions between Jews and Christians, Ivanhoe is credited for increased interest in chivalric romance and medievalism. John Henry Newman claimed that Scott “had first turned mens minds in the direction of the Middle Ages”, while Thomas Carlyle and John Ruskin likewise asserted Scotts great influence upon the revival of interest in the medieval period, primarily based upon the publication of the novel Ivanhoe.[1] Moreover, Ivanhoe much influenced popular perceptions of Richard the Lionheart, King John, and Robin Hood.

Description Good Reads: This vintage book contains Sir Walter Scotts 1820 historical novel, “Ivanhoe.” Set in twelfth-century England, it tells the story of a Wilfred of Ivanhoe, a Saxon who has become disgraced in his fathers eyes for his allegiance to the Norman king, Richard I. Ivanhoe is considered to have had a significant influence on increasing interest in romance and medievalism in literature, and it is highly recommended for those with an interest in these genres. Sir Walter Scott (1771 – 1832) was a Scottish historical novelist, poet, and playwright – considered to be the first truly international English-language author. Many vintage texts such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive, and it is with this in mind that we are republishing this book now, in an affordable, high-quality, modern edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned biography of the author.

Description Penquin: Hailed by Victor Hugo as the real epic of our age, Ivanhoe was an immensely popular bestseller when first published in 1819. The book inspired literary imitations as well as paintings, dramatizations, and even operas. Now Sir Walter Scott s sweeping romance of medieval England has prompted a lavish new television production. In the twelfth century, Sir Wilfred of Ivanhoe returns home to England from the Third Crusade to claim his inheritance and the love of the lady Rowena. The heroic adventures of this noble Saxon knight involve him in the struggle between Richard the Lion-Hearted and his malignant brother John: a conflict that brings Ivanhoe into alliance with the mysterious outlaw Robin Hood and his legendary fight for the forces of good. Scott s characters, like Shakespeare s and Jane Austen s, have the seed of life in them, observed Virginia Woolf. The emotions in which Scott excels are not those of human beings pitted against other human beings, but of man pitted against Nature, of man in relation to fate. His romance is the romance of hunted men hiding in woods at night; of brigs standing out to sea; of waves breaking in the moonlight; of solitary sands and distant horsemen; of violence and suspense. For Henry James, Scott was a born storyteller. . . . Since Shakespeare, no writer has created so immense a gallery of portraits.
