Description wiki: Lady Audleys Secret is a sensation novel by Mary Elizabeth Braddon published in 1862.[1] It was Braddons most successful and well-known novel. Critic John Sutherland (1989) described the work as “the most sensationally successful of all the sensation novels”.[1] The plot centres on “accidental bigamy” which was in literary fashion in the early 1860s.[1] The plot was summarised by literary critic Elaine Showalter (1982): “Braddons bigamous heroine deserts her child, pushes husband number one down a well, thinks about poisoning husband number two and sets fire to a hotel in which her other male acquaintances are residing”.[2][3] Elements of the novel mirror themes of the real-life Constance Kent case of June 1860 which gripped the nation for years.[4]
Description Good Reads: Bigamy, child abandonment, deception, theft, murder, and insanity all take part of Mary Elizabeth Braddons novel. Her over-the-top drama was one of the most popular novels of the mid-1800s and provides an interesting portrayal of both class- and gender issues as they intersect within the domestic sphere.
Description Penquin: Weathering critical scorn, Lady Audley s Secret quickly established Mary Elizabeth Braddon as the leading light of Victorian sensation fiction, sharing the honour only with Wilkie Collins. Addictive, cunningly plotted and certainly sensational, Lady Audley s Secret draws on contemporary theories of insanity to probe mid-Victorian anxieties about the rapid rise of consumer culture. What is the mystery surrounding the charming heroine? Lady Audley s secret is investigated by Robert Audley, aristocrat turned detective, in a novel that has lost none of its power to disturb and entertain.

Description Good Reads: Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

Description Good Reads: It is almost impossible to envision what childhood would be like without the enchanting world of of fairyland. The snow-queen, the mermaids son, ogres and dwarfs, monsters and magicians, fairies and giants – these are the companions who thrill boys and girls of all lands and all times, as Andrew Langs phenomenally successful collection of stories have proved. From the day that they were first printed, the Lang fairy tale books of many colors have entertained thousands of youngsters, as they have also brought pleasure to the parents who have read these classics to their children. The Pink Fairy Book contains 41 tales from Japan, Scandinavia, Sicily, Africa, and the Catalonian tradition. They range from such familiar stories as Hans Christian Andersens “The Snow-Queen” and “The Fir-Tree” to virtually unknown tales of the Tanuki, and unforgettable Japanese creatures; of the strange labors demanded by a generous troll; for the cruel treatment given lovely Maiden Bright-eye; and of many other people and happenings that are different enough to captivate young imaginations, but familiar enough so that boys and girls everywhere will listen and understand.

Additional Research: Fairy Books is a collection of fairy tales divided into twelve books, each associated with a different colour. Collected together by Andrew Land they are sourced from a number of different countries and were translated by Langs wife and other translators who also retold many of the tales. Description Good Reads: In these reminiscences it is my object to recount some of the services I have rendered to civilisation in the course of my career, While abstaining as far as possible from compromising exalted individuals or embittering international relations. That I am not a man who opens his mouth rashly may be gathered from the fact that, although at any time during the long struggle between Briton and Boer for the mastery in South Africa, I might have completely changed the situation with a word, that word was not uttered while a single Boer remained under arms. In order to explain how I came to be concerned in this affair, I had better begin by giving a few particulars about myself, and the almost unique position which I hold among the secret service bureaus of Europe and America.

Description Good Reads: Emily Dorothy Scarborough was an American writer who wrote about Texas, folk culture, cotton farming, ghost stories and womens life in the Southwest. Scarborough was born in Mount Carmel, Texas. At the age of four she moved to Sweetwater, Texas for her mothers health, as her mother needed the drier climate. The family soon left Sweetwater in 1887, so that the Scarborough children could get a good education at Baylor College. Even though Scarboroughs writings are identified with Texas, she studied at University of Chicago and Oxford University and beginning in 1916 taught literature at Columbia University. While receiving her PhD from Columbia, she wrote a dissertation, “The Supernatural in Modern English Fiction (1917)”. Sylvia Ann Grider writes in a critical introduction [1] the dissertation “was so widely acclaimed by her professors and colleagues that it was published and it has become a basic reference work.”

Description wiki: The eight main islands are (from largest to smallest in area) Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Graciosa. The archipelago includes many smaller islands and islets, including Alegranza, Isla de Lobos, Monta a Clara, Roque del Oeste, and Roque del Este. It also includes a number of rocks, including those of Salmor, Fasnia, Bonanza, Garachico, and Anaga. In ancient times, the island chain was often referred to as “the Fortunate Isles”.[6] The Canary Islands are the southernmost region of Spain, and the largest and most populous archipelago of Macaronesia.[7] Because of their location, the Canary Islands have historically been considered a bridge between the four continents of Africa, North America, South America, and Europe.[8] In 2019, the Canary Islands had a population of 2,153,389,[2] with a density of 287.39 inhabitants per km2, making it the eighth most populous autonomous community of Spain. The population is mostly concentrated in the two capital islands: around 43% on the island of Tenerife and 40% on the island of Gran Canaria.

The negro waiters, having served all the food and drink prescribed, perched on the railing of the veranda outside the dining-room, ready to offer further liquids if they should be demanded. Description wiki: The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature is a book by Harvard University psychologist and philosopher William James. It comprises his edited Gifford Lectures on natural theology, which were delivered at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland between 1901 and 1902. The lectures concerned the psychological study of individual private religious experiences and mysticism, and used a range of examples to identify commonalities in religious experiences across traditions. Soon after its publication, Varieties entered the Western canon of psychology and philosophy and has remained in print for over a century. James later developed his philosophy of pragmatism. There are many overlapping ideas in Varieties and his 1907 book Pragmatism
Description Good Reads: “I am neither a theologian, nor a scholar learned in the history of religions, nor an anthropologist. Psychology is the only branch of learning in which I am particularly versed. To the psychologist the religious propensities of man must be at least as interesting as any other of the facts pertaining to his mental constitution. It would seem, therefore, as a psychologist, the natural thing for me would be to invite you to a descriptive survey of those religious propensities.” When William James went to the University of Edinburgh in 1901 to deliver a series of lectures on “natural religion,” he defined religion as “the feelings, acts, and experiences of individual men in their solitude, so far as they apprehend themselves to stand in relation to whatever they may consider the divine.” Considering religion, then, not as it is defined by–or takes place in–the churches, but as it is felt in everyday life, he undertook a project that, upon completion, stands not only as one of the most important texts on psychology ever written, not only as a vitally serious contemplation of spirituality, but for many critics one of the best works of nonfiction written in the 20th century. Reading The Varieties of Religious Experience, it is easy to see why. Applying his analytic clarity to religious accounts from a variety of sources, James elaborates a pluralistic framework in which “the divine can mean no single quality, it must mean a group of qualities, by being champions of which in alternation, different men may all find worthy missions.” Its an intellectual call for serious religious tolerance–indeed, respect–the vitality of which has not diminished through the subsequent decades.
Description Penquin: A milestone in religious thought. . . . James combines a positive approach to religion with a non-dogmatic and thoroughly empirical approach to the religious life. The combination is not only rare but creative. -Reinhold Niebuhr Philosopher and psychologist William James championed the value of individual experience with an eloquence and zeal that placed him beside Emerson and Whitman as a classic exponent of American democratic culture. In The Varieties of Religious Experience he takes on the very inner citadel of human life by focusing on intensely religious individuals from different cultures and eras, in order to explore from within how religion enriches human lives.

Description wiki: Is a philosophical tradition that considers words and thought as tools and instruments for prediction, problem solving, and action, and rejects the idea that the function of thought is to describe, represent, or mirror reality. Pragmatists contend that most philosophical topics such as the nature of knowledge, language, concepts, meaning, belief, and science are all best viewed in terms of their practical uses and successes. Pragmatism began in the United States in the 1870s. Its origins are often attributed to the philosophers Charles Sanders Peirce, William James, and John Dewey. In 1878, Peirce described it in his pragmatic maxim: “Consider the practical effects of the objects of your conception. Then, your conception of those effects is the whole of your conception of the object.”[1]
Description Good Reads: A profoundly influential figure in American psychology, William James (1842 1910) was also a philosopher of note, who used Charles S. Peirces theories of pragmatism as a basis for his own conception of that influential philosophy. For James, this meant an emphasis on “radical empiricism” and the concept that the meaning of any idea philosophical, political, social, or otherwise has validity only in terms of its experiential and practical consequences. James propounded his theories of pragmatism in this book, one of the most important in American philosophy. In a sense, he wished to test competing systems of thought in the “marketplace of actual experience” to determine their validity, i.e. whether adopting a particular philosophical theory or way of looking at the world makes an actual difference in individual conduct or in how we perceive and react to the varieties of experience. In these pages, James not only makes a strong case for his own ideas, but mounts a powerful attack against the transcendental and rationalist tradition. For anyone interested in William James or the history of American philosophical thought, Pragmatism is an essential and thought provoking reference. In this handy, inexpensive edition, it will challenge and stimulate any thinking perso
Description Penquin: ABOUT PRAGMATISM AND OTHER WRITINGS The writings of William James represent one of America s most original contributions to the history of ideas. Ranging from philosophy and psychology to religion and politics, James composed the most engaging formulation of American pragmatism. Pragmatism grew out of a set of lectures and the full text is included here along with The Meaning of Truth , Psychology , The Will to Believe , and Talks to Teachers on Psychology .

Description Original: DO NOT USE AS IS – RUN THRU AI Pragmatism by William James remains one of the most important books in American philosophy. As a pragmatist, James contended that most philosophical topics such as the nature of knowledge, language, concepts, meaning, belief, and science are all best viewed in terms of their practical uses and successes. Drawing on the writings of Charles S. Pierce, James, in these pages, posited a competition in the marketplace of ideas. Does adopting one philosophy (or way of seeing the world) versus another philosophy make a difference in how we see the world and how we conduct ourselves within that world? A Classic in American philosophy, Pragmatism makes the case that any philosophical theory should not incorporate supernatural or transempirical entities. James notion of Radical Empiricism is a theory of knowledge that emphasizes the role of experience, especially sensory perception, in the formation of ideas.

Description wiki: is an 1872 work of dramatic theory by the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. It was reissued in 1886 as The Birth of Tragedy, Or: Hellenism and Pessimism (German: Die Geburt der Trag die, Oder: Griechentum und Pessimismus). The later edition contained a prefatory essay, “An Attempt at Self-Criticism”, wherein Nietzsche commented on this earliest book.
Description Good Reads: A compelling argument for the necessity for art in life, Nietzsches first book is fuelled by his enthusiasms for Greek tragedy, for the philosophy of Schopenhauer and for the music of Wagner, to whom this work was dedicated. Nietzsche outlined a distinction between its two central forces: the Apolline, representing beauty and order, and the Dionysiac, a primal or ecstatic reaction to the sublime. He believed the combination of these states produced the highest forms of music and tragic drama, which not only reveal the truth about suffering in life, but also provide a consolation for it. Impassioned and exhilarating in its conviction, The Birth of Tragedy has become a key text in European culture and in literary criticism
Description Penquin: The first book by the author of the classic philosophical text Beyond Good and Evil. The youthful faults of this work were exposed by the author himself in the brilliant Attempt at a Self-Criticism, which he added to the new edition of 1886. But the book, whatever its excesses, remains one of the most relevant statements on tragedy ever penned. It exploded the conception of Greek culture that was prevalent down through the Victorian era, and it analyzed themes developed in the twentieth century by classicists, existentialists, psychoanalysts, and others.

Description Original: DO NOT USE AS IS RUN THRU AI Nietzsche found in classical Athenian tragedy an art form that transcended the pessimism and nihilism of a fundamentally meaningless world. The Greek spectators, by looking into the abyss of human suffering and affirming it, passionately and joyously affirmed the meaning of their own existence. They knew themselves to be infinitely more than petty individuals, finding self-affirmation not in another life, not in a world to come, but in the terror and ecstasy alike celebrated in the performance of tragedies. Nietzsche argues that the tragedy of Ancient Greece was the highest form of art due to its mixture of both Apollonian and Dionysian elements into one seamless whole, allowing the spectator to experience the full spectrum of the human condition. The Dionysian element was to be found in the music of the chorus, while the Apollonian element was found in the dialogue which gave a concrete symbolism that balanced the Dionysian revelry. Basically, the Apollonian spirit was able to give form to the abstract Dionysian. The Birth of Tragedy has become an important text in European philosophy, literary criticism, and culture.

Description Original: DO NOT US AS IS RUN THRU AI The Castle of Otranto is a novel by Horace Walpole. First published in 1764, it is generally regarded as the first gothic novel. In the second edition, Walpole added the subtitle A Gothic Story. Set in a haunted castle, the novel merged medievalism and terror in a style that has endured for centuries. It is the first supernatural English novel and widely considered the most influential work of Gothic fiction. It blends elements of realist fiction with the supernatural and fantastical, establishing many of the plot devices and character-types that would become typical of the Gothic novel: secret passages, clanging trapdoors, pictures beginning to move, and doors closing by themselves. The aesthetic of this book has shaped modern-day gothic books, films, art, music and the goth subculture

Description wiki: “The Vampyre” is a short work of prose fiction written in 1819 by John William Polidori taken from the story Lord Byron told as part of a contest among Polidori, Mary Shelley, Lord Byron, and Percy Shelley. The same contest produced the novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus The Vampyre is often viewed as the progenitor of the romantic vampire genre of fantasy fiction. The work is described by Christopher Frayling as “the first story successfully to fuse the disparate elements of vampirism into a coherent literary genre.”
Description Good Reads: A young English gentleman of means, Aubrey is immediately intrigued by Lord Ruthven, the mysterious newcomer among society s elite. His unknown origin and curious behavior tantalizes Aubrey s imagination. But the young man soon discovers a sinister character hidden behind his new friend s glamorous facade. When the two are set upon by bandits while traveling together in Europe, Ruthven is fatally injured. Before drawing his last breath, he makes the odd request that Aubrey keep his death and crimes secret for a year and a day. But when Ruthven resurfaces in London making overtures toward Aubrey s sister Aubrey realizes this immortal fiend is a vampyre. John William Polidori s The Vampyre is both a classic tale of gothic horror and the progenitor of the modern romantic vampire myth that has been fodder for artists ranging from Anne Rice to Alan Ball to Francis Ford Coppola. Originally published in 1819, many decades before Bram Stoker s Dracula, and misattributed to Polidori s friend Lord Byron, The Vampyre has kept readers up at night for nearly two hundred years.

A wealthy young man, Aubrey, befriends him at a party and agrees to travel with him around Europe. Soon, though, Aubrey discovers something sinister lies beneath the surface of his newly found friend but is it too late to avert disaster for himself and his family? The Vampyre, A Tale is considered the progenitor of all modern vampire romance stories and has influenced such artists ranging from Francis Ford Coppola to Alan Ball, to Ann Rice. Predating Stokers Dracula by 78 years, this Polidori tale transformed the vampire from a character in folklore into the form that is recognized today an aristocratic fiend who preys among high society. The authorship of this novel was ordinally misattributed to Polidori s friend Lord Byron which helped propel the novel s immediate success when first published.
