Description wiki: In its first half, Wilde recounts their previous relationship and extravagant lifestyle which eventually led to Wildes conviction and imprisonment for gross indecency. He indicts both Lord Alfreds vanity and his own weakness in acceding to those wishes. In the second half, Wilde charts his spiritual development in prison and identification with Jesus Christ, whom he characterises as a romantic, individualist artist. The letter begins “Dear Bosie” and ends “Your Affectionate Friend”. Wilde wrote the letter between January and March 1897, close to the end of his imprisonment. Contact had lapsed between Douglas and Wilde and the latter had suffered from his close supervision, physical labour, and emotional isolation. Nelson, the new prison governor, thought that writing might be more cathartic than prison labour. He was not allowed to send the long letter which he was allowed to write “for medicinal purposes”; each page was taken away when completed, and only at the end could he read it over and make revisions. Nelson gave the long letter to him on his release on 18 May 1897.[1] Wilde entrusted the manuscript to the journalist Robert Ross (another former lover, loyal friend, and rival to “Bosie”). Ross published the letter in 1905, five years after Wildes death, giving it the title “De Profundis” from Psalm 130. It was an incomplete version, excised of its autobiographical elements and references to the Queensberry family; various editions gave more text until in 1962 the complete and correct version appeared in a volume of Wildes letters.
Description Good Reads: De Profundis (Latin: “from the depths”) is a 50,000 word letter written by Oscar Wilde during his imprisonment in Reading Gaol, to Lord Alfred Douglas, his lover. Wilde wrote the letter between January and March 1897; he was not allowed to send it, but took it with him upon release. In it he repudiates Lord Alfred for what Wilde finally sees as his arrogance and vanity; he had not forgotten Douglass remark, when he was ill, “When you are not on your pedestal you are not interesting.” He also felt redemption and fulfillment in his ordeal, realizing that his hardship had filled the soul with the fruit of experience, however bitter it tasted at the time
Description Penquin: Written from Wilde s prison cell at Reading Gaol to his friend and lover Lord Alfred Douglas, De Profundis explodes the conventions of the traditional love letter and offers a scathing indictment of Douglas s behavior, a mournful elegy for Wilde s own lost greatness, and an impassioned plea for reconciliation. At once a bracingly honest account of ruinous attachment and a profound meditation on human suffering, De Profundis is a classic of gay literature. Richard Ellmann calls De Profundis “a love letter One of the greatest, and the longest, ever written.”
Additional Research:
Description Original: Oscar Wilde was an Irish poet and playwright. After writing in different forms throughout the 1880s, he became one of the most popular playwrights in London in the early 1890s. He was imprisoned after his criminal conviction for gross indecency stemming from consensual homosexual acts. He died of meningitis at the age of 46. De Profundis, Latin for From the Depths is his 50,000-word letter written while he was incarcerated to his lover Lord Alfred Douglas. In the first half of his writings, he recounts their previous relationship and extravagant lifestyle which eventually led to Wildes conviction and he rebukes Lord Alfred for his vanity and his own weakness in acceding to the affair. In the second half, Wilde charts his spiritual development in prison and identification with Jesus Christ, whom he characterizes as a romantic, individualist artist. The letter begins “Dear Bosie” and ends “Your Affectionate Friend”.

Description wiki: De vita Caesarum (Latin; lit. “About the Life of the Caesars”), commonly known as The Twelve Caesars, is a set of twelve biographies of Julius Caesar and the first 11 emperors of the Roman Empire written by Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus. The work, written in AD 121 during the reign of the emperor Hadrian, was the most popular work of Suetonius, at that time Hadrians personal secretary, and is the largest among his surviving writings. It was dedicated to a friend, the Praetorian prefect Gaius Septicius Clarus. The Twelve Caesars was considered very significant in antiquity and remains a primary source on Roman history. The book discusses the significant and critical period of the Principate from the end of the Republic to the reign of Domitian; comparisons are often made with Tacitus, whose surviving works document a similar period.

Description Penquin: As private secretary to the Emperor Hadrian, the scholar Suetonius had access to the imperial archives and used them (along with eyewitness accounts) to produce one of the most colourful biographical works in history. The Twelve Caesars chronicles the public careers and private lives of the men who wielded absolute power over Rome, from the foundation of the empire under Julius Caesar and Augustus, to the decline into depravity and civil war under Nero and the recovery that came with his successors. A masterpiece of observation, anecdote and detailed physical description, The Twelve Caesars presents us with a gallery of vividly drawn and all too human individuals. James B. Rives has sensitively updated Robert Graves s now classic translation, reinstating Latin terms and updating vocabulary while retaining the liveliness of the original. This edition contains a new chronology, further reading, glossaries, maps, notes and an introduction discussing Suetonius life and works.

Description Original: DO NOT USE AS IS RUN THRU AI The Last of the Mohicans is set in 1757, during the French and Indian War when France and Great Britain battled for control of North America. During this war, both the French and the British used Native American allies, but the French were particularly dependent on them, as they were outnumbered in the Northeast frontier areas by the British. This classic literary novel, the most popular Leatherstocking Tale from James Fenimore Cooper, tells the story of Nathaniel “Natty” Bumppo, a brave woodsman, and his loyal companions Chingachgook, the last chief of the Mohican tribe and his son Uncas. This thrilling action novel takes place in upper New York state forests highlighting the bravery, treachery, and loyalty within these bloody battles and gives us a moving portrayal of frontier life and the vanishing of a noble race.

Description Original: DO NOT USE AS IS RUN THRU AI Vanity Fair is a masterful satire on the whole of society. Framed as a puppet play the story follows two women whose lives are polar opposite friends Amelia Sedley, a spoiled daughter of a wealthy family with typical Victorian naivete, and Becky Sharp a woman of questionable morals, big ambition, and a brilliant wit. Originally published in serial form, Thackeray originally subtitled the book, A Novel without a Hero reflecting Thackeray's interest in deconstructing his era's conventions regarding literary heroism. The serial was a popular and critical success; the novel is now considered a classic. If Truth were again a goddess, Thackeray should be her high priest. Charlotte Bront

Description Original: DO NOT USE AS IS RUN THRU AI Hunted Down is a fascinating selection of Charles Dickens detective stories. This classic anthology also includes snippets of Dickens other novels about lawmen and crime. Dickens himself was briefly law clerk for the firm of Ellis and Blackmore and later a legal stenographer. During this time he had the opportunity to ride along with detectives as they patrolled London streets. He observed police practices, murder trials, and even attended public executions. From this firsthand experience, Dickens created his most memorable crime-fighting characters such as Mr. Nadgett in the book Martin Chuzzlewit which many consider to be the first realistic detective novel, and from Bleakhouse, Inspector Bucket.

Description Original: DO NOT USE AS IS THUE AI The Wisdom of Father Brown by G.K. Chesterton contains 12 of the 52 Father Brown stories. It is the second Father Brown novel after The Innocence of Father Brown. Each tale is short and easy to read with clever twists and strong plots. Published between 1910-1936 this collection features The Absence of Mr. Glass and Paradise of Thieves among others. Unlike the better- known fictional detective Sherlock Holmes, Father Brown's methods tend to be intuitive rather than deductive. He explains his method in The Secret of Father Brown: "You see, I had murdered them all myself… I had planned out each of the crimes very carefully. I had thought out exactly how a thing like that could be done, and in what style or state of mind, a man could really do it. And when I was quite sure that I felt exactly like the murderer myself, of course, I knew who he was."

Description Original: DO NOT USE AS IS – RUN THRU AI Something New, Something Fresh is a novel by P. G. Wodehouse, first published as "Something New" in the United States, on September 3, 1915. It was published in the United Kingdom as "Something Fresh" on September 16, 1915. There are several differences between the American and British versions, but essentially, it is the same book. The novel introduces Lord Emsworth of Blandings Castle, whose home and family reappear in many of Wodehouse's later short stories and novels. The story is a comic caricature of English aristocratic life and the American aristocracy of wealth. The servants of the English country house, who follow a very elaborate hierarchy and take meals at many different social levels, mimic their betters, "and in so doing make their betters look absurd".

Description Original: DO NOT USE AS IS RUN THRU AI The Last Man is a dystopian, apocalyptic, science fiction novel by Mary Shelley. Late 21st Century Europe is devastated by a mysterious pandemic illness that quickly ravages the entire globe, nearly leading to the extinction of humanity. This post-apocalyptic novel is considered the first published work in the dystopian fiction genre. The Last Man received the worst reviews of all of Mary Shelleys novels. Nearly universally derided, individual reviewers labelled the book “sickening” criticized its “stupid cruelties”, and called the authors imagination “diseased”. The reaction startled Mary Shelley, who promised her publisher a more popular book next time. Nonetheless, she later spoke of The Last Man as one of her favorite works and it is now ranked as her best works. The novel was not reprinted until 1965 and since has received new critical attention, perhaps because the notion of lastness had become more relevant. It has resurged even more profoundly since the outbreak of the Covid 19 virus in 2020

Description Original: DO NOT USE AS IS RUN THRU AI The Red Book of Hergest and The White Book of Rhydderch are the two manuscripts in which The Mabinogion were preserved. Written between 1300-1425 the stories originated from oral tales. The Mabinogion is believed to be one of the most important collections of Celtic tales that began in Wales. With a mixture of chivalry and fantasy, these tales foretell medieval romances that came much later and truly evoke the golden age of the Celtic civilization. Closely related to the legends of King Arthur the tales conjure up the magic and mystery of the times. (King Arthur is even one of the characters in the tales) Much as in the stories of Greek Mythology and the Lord of the Rings these tales feature drama, philosophy, romance, tragedy, fantasy, magic, betrayal, humor, and epic bravery.
