Description wiki: The Blithedale Romance (1852) is a novel by American author Nathaniel Hawthorne. It is the third major “romance”, as he called the form. Its setting is a utopian farming commune based on Brook Farm, of which Hawthorne was a founding member and where he lived in 1841. The novel dramatizes the conflict between the communes ideals and the members private desires and romantic rivalries.
Description Good Reads: Abjuring the city for a pastoral life, a group of utopians set out to reform a dissipated America. But the group is a powerful mix of competing ambitions and its idealism finds little satisfaction in farmwork. Instead, of changing the world, the members of the Blithedale community individually pursue egotistical paths that ultimately lead to tragedy. Hawthornes tale both mourns and satirizes a rural idyll not unlike that of nineteenth-century America at large.

Additional Research: AMAZON) George Chanler s offer of a position as literary secretary of his Arctic expedition came to me one fine May morning when I was sitting at my desk, glooming from an eighteenth-story height down upon the East River, and dreading to begin the day s work. I had sat so for many mornings past. I was not happy; I was a failure. I was thirty years old, had a college education; my health was splendid and I was intelligent and ambitious. And I was precariously occupying a position as country correspondent in Hurst s Mail Order Emporium, salary $25 a week, with every reason to believe that I had achieved the limits of such success as my capabilities entitled me to. You ain t got no punch, Mr. Pitt; that s the matter vit you, was my employer s verdict. You re a fine feller, but oof! How you haf got into the rut! I had. I was in so deeply that I had lost confidence and was losing hope. That was why I, Gardner Pitt, bookman by instinct and office-cog by vocation, was ripe for Chanler s sensational offer. My friendship with Chanler, which had been a close one at school where I had done half his work for him, had of a necessity languished during the last few years. There is not much room for friendship between a poorly paid office man and an idle young millionaire. Yet it was apparent that George had not forgotten, for now he turned to me when he wanted some one to accompany him and write the history of his Arctic achievements. His offer came in the form of a long telegram from Seattle where he was outfitting his new yacht, Wanderer. Being what he was George gave me absolutely no useful information concerning the nature of his expedition. In what most concerned me, however, his message was sufficient: a light task, a Summer vacation, and at generous terms. I looked out of the window at the wearying roofs of the city, and the yellow paper crumpled in my fingers as I clenched my fist. There was none of the adventurer in me. I was not in the optimistic frame of mind necessary to an explorer. But Chanler s offer was, at least, a chance to escape from New York. I bade Mr. Hurst good-by, and went out and sent a wire of acceptance

Description wiki: is a long narrative poem in four parts written by Lord Byron. The poem was published between 1812 and 1818. Dedicated to “Ianthe”, it describes the travels and reflections of a world-weary young man, who is disillusioned with a life of pleasure and revelry and looks for distraction in foreign lands. In a wider sense, it is an expression of the melancholy and disillusionment felt by a generation weary of the wars of the post-Revolutionary and Napoleonic eras. The title comes from the term childe, a medieval title for a young man who was a candidate for knighthood. The poem was widely imitated and contributed to the cult of the wandering Byronic hero who falls into melancholic reverie as he contemplates scenes of natural beauty. Its autobiographical subjectivity was widely influential, not only in literature but in the arts of music and painting as well, and was a powerful ingredient in European Romanticism.
Description Good Reads: Childe Harold s Pilgrimage is a long poem about a traveling young man who journeys across the world to combat his disillusionment with his own society. Since the title character is a “childe”, it means he was a noble who forgoes his destiny back home for the exciting unknown. Its also eerily similar to Lord Byrons own life story, of a man who traveled across Europe to take part in other nations wars.

Description wiki: is a 1908 novel by English writer E. M. Forster, about a young woman in the restrained culture of Edwardian era England. Set in Italy and England, the story is both a romance and a humorous critique of English society at the beginning of the 20th century. Merchant Ivory produced an award-winning film adaptation in 1985. The Modern Library ranked A Room with a View 79th on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century (1998).
Description Good Reads: “But you do,” he went on, not waiting for contradiction. “You love the boy body and soul, plainly, directly, as he loves you, and no other word expresses it …” Lucy has her rigid, middle-class life mapped out for her, until she visits Florence with her uptight cousin Charlotte, and finds her neatly ordered existence thrown off balance. Her eyes are opened by the unconventional characters she meets at the Pension Bertolini: flamboyant romantic novelist Eleanor Lavish, the Cockney Signora, curious Mr Emerson and, most of all, his passionate son George. Lucy finds herself torn between the intensity of life in Italy and the repressed morals of Edwardian England, personified in her terminally dull fianc Cecil Vyse. Will she ever learn to follow her own heart?
Description Penquin: Wit and intelligence are the hallmarks of this probing portrait of the English character. And in this story of extreme contrasts in values, social class, and cultural perspectives an unconventional romantic relationship leads to conventional happiness in a delightful social comedy. While touring Italy with her overbearing cousin, well-bred Lucy Honeychurch falls in love with the handsome but entirely unsuitable George Emerson, only to become engaged to the haughty Cecil Vyse. But Lucy is lured away from the conventions of upper-middle-class Edwardian society by her yearnings for the clerk she left behind. A Room with a View satirizes the English notion of respectability and remains Forster s most beloved novel and a twentieth-century classic.

Description wiki: is a comedy by Oliver Goldsmith, first performed in London in 1773. The play is a favourite for study by English literature and theatre classes in the English-speaking world. It is one of the few plays from the 18th century to have retained its appeal and is still regularly performed. The play has been adapted into a film several times, including in 1914 and 1923. Initially the play was titled Mistakes of a Night and the events within the play take place in one long night. In 1778, John OKeeffe wrote a loose sequel, Tony Lumpkin in Town
Description Good Reads: This edition brings together four eighteenth-century comedies that illustrate the full variety of the social and cultural mores of the time. Fieldings The Modern Husband, written before the 1737 Licensing Act that restricted political and social comment, depicts wife-pandering and widespread social corruption. In Garrick and Colmans The Clandestine Marriage two lovers marry in defiance of parental wishes and rue the consequences. She Stoops to Conquer explores the comic and not-so-comic consequences of mistaken identity, and in Wild Oats, the strolling player Rover is a beacon of hope at a time of unrest. Part of the Oxford English Drama series, this edition has modern-spelling texts, critical introduction, wide-ranging annotation, and an informative bibliography

Additional Research: AMAZOM) God, in Thy mercy, let me never again hear any one speak of the Glory of War! I am too exhausted to feel tired.” Ralph Scotts magnificent World War I classic has come to ebooks for the first time. In a harrowing, graphic account of life on the front lines of The Great Wars trenches, Scott was unsparing of the horror he witnessed. Few generals know what the line soldier experiences. In his forward to Scotts classic, Major-General Sir Frederick Maurice writes, “…they have neither time nor space to concern themselves with the things that mattered to the men in the ranks. We can only get the things that matter, the misery, suffering, and endurance, the filth, the horror, the desolation, which are a part and the greater part even of the most triumphant progress in modern war, from the men who have experienced them.” Scotts book changed the face of how war was viewed back home. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Description wiki: It was originally published in a serial form as The Story of a Puppet (Italian: La storia di un burattino) in the Giornale per i bambini, one of the earliest Italian weekly magazines for children, starting from 7 July 1881. The story stopped after nearly 4 months and 8 episodes at Chapter 15, but by popular demand from readers, the episodes were resumed on 16 February 1882.[1] In February 1883, the story was published in a single book. Since then, the spread of Pinocchio on the main markets for childrens books of the time has been continuous and uninterrupted, and it was met with enthusiastic reviews worldwide.[1] A universal icon and a metaphor of the human condition, the book is considered a canonical piece of childrens literature and has had great impact on world culture. Philosopher Benedetto Croce reputed it as one of the greatest works of Italian literature.[2] Since its first publication, it has inspired hundreds of new editions, stage plays, merchandising, television series and movies, such as Walt Disneys iconic animated version, and commonplace ideas such as a liars long nose. According to an extensive research done by the Fondazione Nazionale Carlo Collodi and based on UNESCO sources in the late 1990s, the book has been translated between 240 and 260 languages worldwide.[3][4] That makes it one of the most translated books in the world.[3] It is considered one of the best-selling books ever published, althought the total sales since its first publication are unknown because of the many public domain re-releases begun in 1940;[3] according to Viero Peroncini: “some sources report 35 million [copies sold], others 80, but it is only a way … to quantifying an unquantifiable success”.[5] According to Francelia Butler, it also remains “the most translated Italian book and, after the Bible, the most widely read”
Description Good Reads: This edition of The Adventures of Pinocchio has been reproduced from the 1901 version with the late Victorian pen and ink illustrations of Carlo Chiostri. Some of the pages have been redesigned, some drawings enlarged, yet Chiostris spirit still pervades the book. Everything is there as before, the familiar profile of Pinocchio, his paper clothes, his bread hat and his friends — good and bad — Gepetto, Master Cherry, the Cat and the Fox, the Carabineers, the Green Fisherman, Fire Eater, the Blue Fairy and many others. This early edition is written and illustrated for older children, and would be of interest to adults.
Description Penquin: Carved from a piece of wood by the old carpenter Geppetto, the puppet Pinocchio comes to life and immediately starts to misbehave. But while this beloved character has achieved literary immortality, the novel has been widely misunderstood. Pinocchio has a penchant for lying, to be sure, but it s when he avoids going to school that he repeatedly gets into trouble. The Adventures of Pinocchio is thus not a cautionary tale about lying but an unusually timely fable for our increasingly authoritarian times a story about the importance of education and of preventing others from pulling our strings. This effervescent new translation captures the antic spirit that makes the mischievous, egotistical, and easily distracted Pinocchio a late nineteenth-century prototype for the likes of Bart Simpson. Featuring copious annotations informed by the translators deep knowledge of Italy, it reveals the novel to be not only a subversively entertaining children s book but also a sophisticated satire reflecting the author s concern for the social inequality of his time and his belief that duty to others is at the core of our humanity.
Additional Research:
Description Original: In the Adventures of Pinocchio, Carlo Collodi has created a masterful story, a universal icon and a metaphor of the human condition. Carpenter Geppetto carves a boy out of wood, who magically comes to life and immediately misbehaves. While it is known most as a tale against telling lies, it is mostly a cautionary tale about not allowing our humanity to be compromised or to let others pull our string. Collodi believed that the core of our humanity was to help others and railed against the social inequality of authoritarian times. A sophisticated satire and a wonderfully entertaining children s story at the same time, it has become one of the best-selling books of all time.

Description Good Reads: The complete three volumes of poetry by Emily Dickinson. Including Epigrams, Letters to Susan Gilbert, and her Black Cake Recipe. Edited by Robert John Mestre Three series are collected into one volume. Each series is organized into four parts: Life, Love, Nature, and Time & Eternity. The connection between these themes and the verse contained therein is generally clear, and the latter category is largely concerned with death a popular topic for Dickinson. While Dickinson is known for being morose, her poems often manage to be both playful and dark at the same time
