When Charles Dickens set out for America in 1842 he was the most famous man of his day to travel there – curious about the revolutionary new civilization that had captured the English imagination. In 1842, the novelist Charles Dickens traveled to the New World of America which had captured the imagination of the English people since the Revolution. His humorous and candid descriptions detailed every experience from his travel by sea, steamboat, and stagecoach to his visits to American courts, prisons, and hospitals on his five-month journey.   Arriving in Boston, he made his way to New York, then to Philadelphia, and went south as Richmond, and west to St. Louis and as far north as near Quebec where he was awestruck by the sight of Niagara Falls.

He found the institutions exemplary, the citizens lacking in table manners, and the land built on slavery to be influenced by a corrupt press and unequal rule by the monied class. At the time of its publication, the book was dismissed by the New York Herald as  the essence of balderdash.  This travelogue provided Dickens with inspiration for his novel Martin Chuzzlewit.

American Notes for General Circulation is a travelogue by Charles Dickens chronicling his visit to North America from January to June 1842.
